A pedestrian and a homeless man brawled on a Seoul street ― over 1000 won.
The drama erupted after the pedestrian flashed his wallet, containing 36,000 won in cash and credit cards, at the homeless man as he begged for 1,000 won, at a park in Siheung, southwestern Seoul, Saturday.
The latter snatched the wallet and made a getaway, but only managed to run 50 meters before the pedestrian caught up with him and hit him, police said.
Officers in Geumcheon booked the 46-year-old pedestrian, identified as Cho, and the 32-year-old homeless man, Kim, Saturday.
Cho reportedly said, ``It was a mere gimmick. I didn't expect him to steal it.''
Kim was quoted as saying, ``I was instantly lured by the money.''

Not that it makes it ok but it serves the arrogant pedestrian right. It's not terribly mature or bright to flash money in the face of a destitute/desperate person and not expect some sort of retribution. In the West, most people have more sense than to do that.
Back in Australia, homeless folk, junkies and beggars tend to be quite aggressive. My brother received a couple of swift knocks to the head as a 12 year old when you made a smart remark to a couple of dudes asking for money. You learn young not to mess with people after money. |

| This doesn't really have anything to do with homeless people but I was once casually walking down the street and I saw a 500won coin so I picked it up and kept going. Then, this ajumma behind me grabbed it out of my hand before I could put it in my pocket and said she saw it first. I laughed it was so ridiculous and she was so serious! I would have paid 500 won for the entertainment factor. |

Totally agree. Bad move on both parts. Terrible title by the person who wrote the article. Obviously, the dispute was over the entire contents of the wallet and not just 1,000 won. |

| I agree about the title as well. The pedestrian is in fact a tool...too bad he caught up with the homeless guy. 36,000 won would've made his day. |

While I totally think that the pedestrain was being an arse flashing his money like that, it in no way gives the homeless person the right to steal from him.
I work near Seoul Station everyday and am tired of being accosted by the people there. I've been hit and grabbed a number of times. If I say nothing and keep my head down, they strike at me because I am ignoring them. If I say 'no', they curse at me.
There are jobs out there to be had. And while I don't presume to know everyone's story, I'm offended when they presume I should give to them simply because they have a hand out.

Despite growing unemployment, there are many people who quit their jobs within a month after landing new ones.
Last month, 5,228 people found jobs after being referred by the Seoul district labor office. Only 25.4 percent remain employed. The rest quit work they had been referred to in less than one month. The percentage of those retaining recently won jobs is below the nation�s average of 28 percent.
�We made an effort to help them find new jobs but many of them quit after three or four days,� said Park Jong-seon, head of the southern section of the Seoul labor office.
�The quality of jobs available has deteriorated due to the financial crisis but there are still many jobseekers who don�t feel desperate yet,� said Gwon Gu-hyeong, head of the Korea Employment Information Service.
Seo Hyeon-ri, 41, who was referred to a position at an electronic parts manufacturer, quit after two days. �I and my friend applied together for positions at the company but only I got a job offer. So I quit,� Seo said.
Kim Si-woo, 29, who has been unemployed for two years since he graduated from college, was referred to a position at a company that produces boxes. �I didn�t like the company�s location and what the company headquarters looked like,� Kim said.
Employers, mostly small and midsize enterprises, are unhappy about employees leaving one after another.
�We hired 10 people in the latter half of last year but all of them left within one or two months,� said Kim Sang-min, president of Iljin Jeonggong, which produces chain gears and large screws. �There are 10 foreign employees working for the company and most of those who quit said they didn�t want to work with foreigners,� Kim said.
�According to the Ministry of Labor, there are 90,000 job openings in the country,� said Shin Ju-yeol, head of the Seoul labor office�s Gangnam District office. �If jobseekers lower their expectations, many of the unemployed will be able to find work.�
Critics said labor offices refer jobseekers to jobs they don�t want.
�The government and companies should provide more detailed information on work available when they make job referrals,� said Hwang Deok-sun, a senior researcher at the Korea Labor Institute. |

Oregon has homeless? I thought that whole can't-pump-your-own-gas thing would have taken care of that problem. Maybe they need a can't-wash-your-own-car law too. |

Oregon has homeless? I thought that whole can't-pump-your-own-gas thing would have taken care of that problem. Maybe they need a can't-wash-your-own-car law too. |
Never watch 'My Own Private Idaho'?
It was set in Portland, Oregon and some of the actors/extras were homeless folk. I had two older sisters so I saw that movie infinite times... |
