So, recently some news has surfaced about a potential conflict between North and South Korea. My girlfriend and I are scheduled to arrive in South Korea in a couple week sand we'll be staying in Gwangju for a year. Do you all think the news is cause to worry?

It definitely doesn't put as at ease with the whole situation. With other factors and our stress levels on the rapid increase, things say that now may not be the best time to head over there.

What are your thoughts on this?

I think you should definitely stay home and not get your worry and stress levels too high. Then go quickly to your local quack to get prescriptions for valium, prozac, lithium, what have you.

then you'll simply have to worry about all the food products that potentially cause or increase the risk of cancer (at current count, I think it's all of them, so stop eating ASAP) and then of course, using a cellphone will cause your *beep* to shrink and then you'll get cancer.

or... you can adopt the refreshingly healthy attitude of "life sucks and then you die" and you will have NONE of these problems and actually enjoy the days when it doesn't suck.

Nate D,

Acknowledging the situation is a good idea, though many people who live there totally ignore (subconsciously repress) the situation and go on with their lives. Some people who post on these threads will dismiss it as just sabre rattling and are in denial of their own vulnerability.

Nothing may happen - on the other hand - something could happen as it is very close and SK could be hit with a missile. One might want to google the Korean War and look at some of the photos to get a taste of the reality that happened - to the set everyday lives of people.

If you are worried about it - and it was something I worried about - maybe choose a different country - as there are many OTHER reasons to choose a different country (exchange rate, failing economy, corrupt bureaucrats and directors/supervisors, sh_tty living conditions, difficult culture) - is the whole thing worth it? Good question to ask yourself as you consider options. I was happy to get out of there before a bomb dropped, yes....

Yes, tensions have been ratcheting up over the last year. This happens when the Norks don't get their way. It's common for them to threaten to turn Seoul into a sea of fire. That isn't going to happen. What may happen is another sea battle in the Yellow Sea. Another possibility is armed inflitrators coming down, like regularly happened pre-2000.

It really isn't that much to worry about for English teachers. Besides, Gwangju is far enough south that you'd have time to swim to Japan if anything did happen.

If you're South of Suwon, you'll be in pretty good shape.

If North Korea starts lobbing shots this way, it'll be their last. I think KJI knows this. Lee is just calling their bluff on the brinksmanship for handouts thing that KJI suckered SK along with under left-wing Noh.

I also see another sea conflict in the very near future. I'd also get a kick out of seeing SK's new destroyer taking out 15 NK targets at once -- something it's fully capable of.

Are people like the OP real or is it a merry band of trolls that come out of the woodwork once a year?

Or is this atypical American behaviour for anything outside of their small town?

When you hear the reports of U.S. military dependents leaving Korea in droves, along with Korean Americans, then you can start worrying. Anything else is a non-issue and will never affect you.

I'm going to stay if something major happens. Even if everyone flees. I need to feel a real sense of danger and fear at some point before I get old. Plus I got some really nice sh.it in my apartment that I need to protect from looters.
