So you are living in Korea as a foreigner, you are dating or you have been married to people from other countries.
Besided all the good things that sparkle when two different cultures meet, is there a thing called politics that drives you insane at times?
Doesnt your wife get mad when you talk shit about Korea?
Dont you feel the urge to fight back when your boyfriend believes he knows a lot about your country but you think he is sooooo wrong?
Dont you feel offended if your value is doubted or your political views are questioned?
To people who dont really care about politics, this is not even a question, but to people like you, who really do, how can you ignore this contradiction? |

| I hear ya. What it comes down to is you gotta show respect for one another no matter what. I used to complain about Koreans a lot but have stopped because it does us no good and I hate it when my husband complains about Canadians. Stick to the positive and keep the negative for Dave's. |

Differences in politics in a bi-cultural relationship can cause huge resentment and enormous arguments. It's best to try to take a relativist/liberal attitude, if possible. But a friend of mine has a Chinese wife who tried to convince me that sending political dissenters to jail isn't that bad--I don't know if I could live with someone who thinks that. |

Don't have a problem with politics.
When the Olympics come around though, it's separate rooms for viewing any head to head competition.
Apolo Ohno's name is still not mentioned in our house.  |

| I'm really lucky in that regard, as my g.f has the ability to see an argument from the other side and is willing to admit the bad points of her countries political landscape. In return I try not to complain too much about small things and try to see the good in Korea. |

I think a bigger issue than difference in political opinion with my girlfriend and I is a difference in emotional attachments to various political arenas. I don't get angry about Korean politics near as much as my girlfriend. I have to be careful as I have a tendency to want to play devil's advocate in order to understand both sides.
In the same manner, my girlfriend couldn't really care about American politics. Outside of who the president is, and major foreign policy decisions, she doesn't really have any interest. I put her to sleep (sometimes literally) if I talk about American politics. |

That is fair, as if you two want to watch different TV programmes, go buy two TVs. Which is much less troublesome than she argues with you and tries to convince you Korean soap opera is much more interesting than WWE, the latter she thinks of stupid and should be erased from the screen. |

I saw both types of couples, they are really lucky...
I was so f***ed up by talking about politics with my ex. Especially when you come from a controversial country, its annoying to hear (even he is your bf) someone talks shit in front of you without considering your feeling. It is a big turn off to me, and I would never think him as a smart guy.
It is like, Korean people love Kimchi, people who dont should just shut up in front of them.

I bet you reversed the cause and effect...
I could see how embarrassing it would be to talk about her "dear leader" in front of your North Korean wife (given a North Korean wife is possible here), thus a wise man would better avoid such topics, even it is high time you talked about those issues, would you at least consider her feeling rather than sound off and make her feel she is so miserable while you are so superior? |
