I'm leaving Korea in a few days for China.
I've been here six years. I'm leaving behind some amazing people. But a wise man once told me that there are two important questions in life. #1 Where are you going? #2 Who are you going with? If you get the order mixed up, you are fucked. Korea is no longer the place for me. I may be back some day, but not for now.
I've seen a lot of people leave Korea, and it always seemed like that is when the poorest behaviour surfaced. People always seemed to need to emotionally distance themselves from the place and each other. A long time ago, I promised myself I wasn't going to do that.
It's been emotional. |

Ha ha ha... you think you can just RUN AWAY??? just like that???
ahhh my poor grasshopper, much you still need to learn in the way of the koreans.
Their shadow will continue to haunt you for the rest of your days. Like a korean cold that just keeps coming back; like a well thrown booomerang, so too is the unshakable presence of koreans.
Oh yes, you can run... you can hide. But this i promise... maybe in a few days, maybe a few weeks or months... maybe in a year... but one day without fail... a bus will cross your path, narrowly miss running over your foot.... and from the bus will emerge, jostling and shoving to get out the door first (identically clad in glarey north face jackets and black star-trek uniforms)... the very people you are pointlessly trying to flee: KOREANS!!!
Heed my words my son, to run from koreans is like trying to eat a picnic on the beach without getting sand in your teeth.... it's like trying to teach a hagwon without getting a finger up the rectum... like trying to teach logic anywhere in korea OR china....
Pointless.. pointless ..... pointless..... wherever you go, there they will be. This i can promise you, one day you will be in china... just innocently strolling along.... and out from nowhere a group of brightly dressed aliens will materialise behind you and stampede in your direction leaving you trampled bruised and bloody. You will then know my son, the very people you are trying to flee from have found you once more.
Koreans: you can run, you can hide.... but you can NEVER escape. |

Pengy's correct.
At any international airport you end up at, just outside, near the smoking area, on the ground will be a fresh hork of phlegm struggling to crawl its way to safety.
And you will know, they are near, and watching. |

Of course, initially it will be hard to distinguish if the fresh hork of phlegm (vainly struggling to mutate before evaporating and/or getting smeared onto somebodies boot) is a korean or a chinese fresh hork of phlegm.
But look around. If the alpha male of the group of nearby little people squabbling like chickens over an unearthed worm is wearing pants pulled halfway up to his armpits and a checkered skin-tight shirt under a suit jacket...chances are that the group are chinese.... ergo, the fresh phlegm likely to be chinese phlegm.
If however the nearby group are all dressed in brightly coloured northface jackets, and black and/or dark blue startrek uniforms..... the phlegm you see will likely be korean. If there are any older (over 40) females in this group of people, chances are there will also be overturned tolley carts, scattered suitcases and knocked over people in the near vicinity. The sound of gum smacking and aroma of rotting cabbage and fish are further indicative signs to observe. |

My two cents
1, Getting used to bad situation is worse than sitting in a hot seat.
2, Repeatedly making wrong desicions ruins one's credit.
May China treat you good. |

See you later.
Korea never gets out of your blood. I still miss it and it has been nearly three years.
Good luck.

I'm out as well....off to the Philippines at the end of the school year. I went down there last week to check stuff out. On my way back I witnessed some great ajumma behaivor.
I'm 6'6" so I get to sit next to the emergency exit. The bathroom is right there as well. Old Korean doesn't understand the latch turns red when someone is inside. So she was hammerin' on the door. "why won't it open" she probably thought. Another ajumma was inside probably taking a huge kimchee dump. Alot of speculation I know.
The banging ajumma tried to pull that I will go in before you come out move (mostly seen on elevators and subways) So we had two fat old Korean ladies battling at the bathroom door. It was freakin' hilarious.
I will miss you Korea....not! |
