ESL Cafe attracts some of the most miserable f*ckers you will find anywhere. Korea does have some miserable aspects, but normal people focus on the better bits: excellent food, booze-friendliness, and plenty of in+out. |
Your priorities?
Some of us have real responsibilities. |

For me, I can understand the negativity. Some people come to Korea, really don't enjoy it, and because of language constraints, feel that the internet (and Dave's) is the only place to vent.
I get that - not every place is for everyone. And if the negatives outweigh the positives, people should move on.
What I don't get is the people returning to this forum (or country) after they've bashed it so. If you really don't like the place, fine, move on. Why continue to dwell in it? |
I think part of the reason they continue to dwell on it is a lot like message boards for particular computer games. I'm a moderator on the IGN boards, and one of the constant complaints is that people who hate an MMORPG seem to hang around those particular boards and continue to make posts complaining about the game. I've come to believe that it has something to do with the perception that they've become part of a community of people who like to complain about the game, so they continue to revisit those boards over and over and continue the complaining, because that's really all they have in common with the people there. I see the same thing here with Dave's where someone left Korea but spent months and months complaining on the boards. Quite often, that person felt a part of the community of the people who were complaining, so it doesn't seem that far off to perceive that there's an identity that was created amongst those who complain, even if they're no longer part of that physical community anymore (living in Korea).
And just like on the gaming boards, people get upset that these people won't leave, but at the same time there are enough people who remain in the same circumstances (no longer play the game but complain) that continues to foster that community where they can meet on common ground. |

I had an Army commander who tried to take my rank and dishonorably discarge me for standing up for my soldiers.
I had a superior who was passive aggressive and during land navigation maneuvers would insist that I walk through a buch of thick bushes rather than keep my pace count and walk around it.
This same idiot was see at walmart a couple of times walking around cursing under his breath.
I was investigated by CPS when a meth baby died on a case I was working on. I didn't do meth and certainly had nothing to do with the death of the baby.
I had bosses from every "professional" envirnment I've ever worked in manipulate regulations for their own benefit.
So from one with a lot of different experience, this is one of the best places to be.
I've neve felt threatened, victimized, intimidated, yelled at, mentally messed with like I was in America.
So until you've experienced the pressures of a real job and all the B.S. that goes with it, you hardly have the ablity to make a wise judgement about the good and the bad of living in Korea.
The only thing that's tough for me about living here is there is no real challenge professionally. I do at times miss the challenges that real jobs provided me but yet I still never want to go back to all the BS I experienced in America. |
Dealing with Army twits is a real job? |

That is true, but just by those who do not take the time to appreciate a new culture or different ideas. These people are cup half empty people, people who think theworld owes them....twats.
So as long as you are cool with things being different and can understand that somethings you will love other things you will hate, then you will be fine. |

Also quality of life goes up and down and the attitudes of people go with it. Maybe if the Won goes back up, so will the boards optimism? |

True, it is dysfunctional, immature and male-chauvinist. But it feels mighty good!

i think it's quite likely that many of the regulars on dave's who seem bent on complaining are hard-working, respectable, successful people from 9-5 (or whatever). this board provides space to vent anonymously, so that we can "grin and bear it" - even when our jobs are profoundly frustrating. everyone needs to vent.
there are obviously some idiots here...but i don't think we should make assumptions about personal characteristics or general mindsets judging from late-night forum posts at dave's. |

There is some venting going on here which is understandable, but I can't defend the volumes and volumes of angry, hateful, temper tantrums on this site.
In all honesty I would not be surprised if this site was monitored by the Southern Poverty Law Center or on a list of hate groups or something. At the very least Dave's would be an excellent resource for someone wanting to justify their disdain for Korea and that makes me ashamed to be a member here because the majority of Koreans I know and interact with are decent people.
I don't know. You can call it therapy and venting, but this isn't your private journal and if you have the desire to mercilessly blast Koreans on a daily basis then don't acted shocked when some of us get offened and think you are every bit as maladjusted as any Korean. |

I think it's good to ask yourself: what if I was living in Germany?
Imagine if you were living in Germany and went on a message board to tell everyone that all Germans are idiots, German food is awful, German politics are ridiculous, German culture is shallow, the German language is impossible to learn and that Germany was pretty much crap. People would laugh at you and let you know that the problem is not with Germany, but with you.
The biggest reason why people feel so alienated in Korea is that they don't look like Koreans. |
