Ok, I know this topic must have been beaten to death, but the search engine isn't working on my end (all I get is a blank page) and I need this stuff asap.
1. Am I in need of a NATIONAL criminal record check?
I'm currently in Tennessee and the Bureau of Investigation here would be giving me a STATEWIDE check.
2. If I need a national check, where do I obtain this?
Thanks for any info. I know this must be annoying. I'm a newbie. |

I had my visa approved last week for a job with EPIK starting in March. At all points in the application process I was told that a local (county) check would be sufficient. The local check was accepted both by EPIK and the Chicago consulate.
In Columbus, Ohio:
I went to the county sheriff's records office. The criminal record check was handed to me at the time of request and they charged only nine cents. |

I'm pretty sure a state or local one will suffice. I believe that that's what a recruiter once told me, and I've seen it said here several times. I got my local one done a few weeks ago and am now waiting for my visa confirmation number.

| Cool. Thanks for the replies. I do find it odd that they wouldn't want a national check. I mean, what if you did something crazy in a different state? It wouldn't show up on a local check, right? |

| Federal, state or local are ok... BUT they will not accept online background checks. They must be received in person. (Though I'm not sure how they can tell the difference except that online checks lack stamps and signatures.) |

| I had a friend get a visa when he had a dui and a drug charge in one city. He just went to the county office(as opposed to the city office) and got a "clear" record check. All it says is "So and so has no criminal records with this department, signed sherrif buford t. justice" |
