So my contract is done March 1st. We are going to China and going to travel around for 2 months.

My school says they can't give me money for a tix back to Canada. They can only pay for my ticket to the next destination that I am going too. It says that in my contract as well. Is there anyway around this? They want to see a receipt after I pay for the ticket then they will pay me the money. I was thinking of buying a tix home, then canceling it right before we are suppose to leave. This way I can get the money....

Any thoughts on this??

last year i did something like that. i bought a refundable ticket back home, showed them the e-ticket, got the money, refunded the ticket and went to thailand. it worked for me

Were you at a public school or a hogwan? I'm worried they will look into it, then see I canceled then screw me on my bonus, or pension or something stupid like that....

PS. they shouldn't really be able to screw you on your pension at this point anyways (pension deductions from them and you should be in a government pension account by now, so they won't be able to touch that). since you're getting ready to leave, maybe you should just quickly check at the pension office to make sure it's all there (you can do this online now too).

you might want to start talking to them now about when you're getting your severance.

my school never checked into it, but i doubt they'd be organized enough to call up the travel agency (and even if they did, would the travel agency give out that kind of information on a client?). i just know that it worked out for me and others on this site (i was asking the same questions last year). good luck!

Good advice... you should receive your severance either on your last payday, or the last day of your contract.

They can't touch/screw with your pension (assuming all the contributions have been made). PS or hogwan, DO NOT leave K-land without your severance... otherwise the chances are very good you will never see it. A public school should have no problems paying (at latest) your severance on the last (business) day of your contract.

This is why I always tell people to get a 14 day or 30 day extension on their exit date so the can wait things out for a while if need be or visit some city that they never got a chance to.

I just went and talked to them about my severance. I started March 12th or so, but my contract says I started March 1st, end Feb 28th. THey said they can not pay me my severance because I have not worked a year. I told them I will take them to the labour board, as my contract states I was here a year. My entry stamp on my passport will tell a different story.

What should I do about this now? I mean they can take 1/52 off my severance if they want...I have to get my severance before I leave. Good to know.

Sorry to say but even though you are entitled to it, you ain't gettin your severance.

You can file your complaint with the labor board and win, but most likely you'll never see that money.

i'd say before you contact the labour board, try the school board coordinator first. explain the severance situation and see what they say, maybe you can get it pro-rated or extend your contract so you will qualify for severance

I'm at a P.S. The coordinator comes back tomorrow, and I'll see what he says. I think they were just TRYING to get out of paying me severance. If they say they are not paying me, I'm going to toss one of them out a 2nd story window.

My first year in Korea, I got fired in my 10th month at a hogwon and lost everything...It wont happen again.

Hopefully they pro rate it by one week.

Why can't Korean's just be honest??

You must 'keep your cool'.

While linear, western logic does not usually apply in K-land, you are lucky to be at a PS. Assemble all pay slips, correspondence, and documentation related to your contract. The question will arise as to your 'start date'. If your first month's pay was pro-rated because you started late, you will have worked for one year as of Feb. 28. If your first month's pay was not pro-rated, you must work until March 12, i.e. for one year. If this is the case, offer to extend your period of sojourn in order to fulfill the one-year requirement for severance.

Put THEM in a no-win situation!

1. Buy a refundable home ticket, cancel it, then book the destination you want. Just DON'T cancel the ticket until you see the air fare in your account. When you see that money then book the flight you want. Also make sure don't leave until you see the severance pay and the last month of pay. For your pension, they won't or shouldn't be able to cheat you. If you don't apply for it on time, then give the pension office your Canadian bank account, they should send you the money within a month. Even if you don't apply for it, your pension stays with you no matter where you go.

2. For your severance pay, I'm sorry to say it was your and your supervisor's responsibility to point out the first working day discrepancy. Chances are you're not going to get it even if you go to the labour board. Anyway in your case, you should just extend your contract until March 11 (March 12-March 11: one year completion)
