|
|
I've always been amazed at ajumma fashion. But this season they've outdone themselves with the newfangled 'duck masks' that they've been wearing. You know the ones, with the nose shape design that makes them look like a cross between a mallard and an alien.
The first time I saw an ajumma walking toward me with visor and mask I think I might have laughed out loud. Now as they pass I just stare at them with a look that says 'You look absolutely fucking ridiculous lady.' |

Translation: One day I saw one woman wearing her *granddaughter's* face mask and it looked funny. I can't explain why it's funny, but all Korean women are batshit for looking like that. I'm going to post it on Dave's. lol!
Those masks are for little kids. |

There's a walking path hear my home that I frequent. I enjoy walking, but what makes it more interesting is anticipating how ridiculous the approaching ajumma will look. I can see her approaching about thirty meters down the path. I can tell that she's doing the absurd arm exercises as she walks, but can't tell exactly what her headgear is. Will there be a perm? visor? hilarious duck mask? As she passes I always look at their face, and if theyve got that mask thing going under the visor I give them the two thumbs up. They look at me like I'm nuts. Can't possibly be them. They looked at themselves in the mirror before they left the house and they looked perfectly fine. |

I was a little bugged out for a second the first time I saw one. I saw it from a short distance, and it was flesh-colored and made the ajumma look like a mutant.
Now that I've seen them a bunch of times, I just file it under "Weird Things Koreans Do". |

Am I alone in thinking that adjumi should go the whole hog and adopt the Burqa? |

I had a conversation with a well traveled, open Korean about this. I asked if there is any chance that education about osteoporosis and depression secondary to low sun exposure would change this stupid fuckn mask bullst. They shook their head and said that dark skin = poor. More stupid to follow.
I guess we all have our aires to put on in some way. Theirs is just scary looking, especially at night and under their ubrella.

I saw one the other day. It even has little air holes in the bill.
Looking for a picture, but remember what site we're on. |

I've always wanted to know exactly what those duck masks are for. What do they do? Why do they wear them? I"m thinking it must be for health reasons otherwise it's just too much. |

Why would you need a photo? Just open your eyes and look at the first ajumma you pass on your way home today. It's not as if they're wearing 'duck' masks, but it's as apt a description as any I suppose. Sometimes ajumma 'fashion' morphs faster than we can come up with terms to describe what we're looking at. There seems to be no head gear, or behaviour, that Koreans deem too inappropriate / unsuitable / weird to display in public. But I guess if ajoshe can get away with a shiny suit while squatting, snorting, smoking and staring, ole ajumma can get away with her funny little alien mask. |

2009 is the Year of the Duck, you dummies. Anyhow, why would you care if some ajumma's want to wear duck masks? I sure don't. |

Jeff, I find your cavalier attitude towards this subject disturbing. You're supposed to either defend the duck mask or be in violent opposition to it.
I know you haven't been around here long, but please try to get with the program. |
