Shout out to the OGs on this thread.
Would now be a good time to mention the fact that, with the current exchange rates, I just got a substantial raise? And that does not take into account the lower cost of living or that my income is tax free.
Oh yes it would. |

Hahahaha!
This thread is a real laugh with its descriptions, etc. of ajummas and other bits of Koreana. I will probably send it on to some I know who've not had the unique experience of visiting Korea, far less that of trying to exit an elevator or subway car in an orderly fashion.

Just my li'l bit of Korea-related trivia:
a few summers ago, on holiday from ROK, I was looking out at Burrard Inlet (a narrow waterway) from a 3rd floor balcony in Vancouver. Now picture it: two women on the sidewalk below, one pushing a stroller - and one wearing one of those wide-brimmed visors ( http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v243/Doddie/Streetmarkets/JanghowonStreetMarket-46.jpg ).
Was it? Was it really what I was seeing?
So I shouted down, "Ajumma! Ajumma! Ajuma!", smiling and waving as I did so.
They looked up, but without missing a beat, without even one muscle twitching as if to give a hint that at least subconsciously she meant to smile or otherwise happily acknowledge another, they resumed looking forward, and they pressed on.
Eureka! I had got it right: that visor, that sequence of reactions (actually, non reactions) - an ajumma at large on foreign soil but, there are some constants in this life, still an ajumma, answerable only to herself...

"my income is tax free":
reary? How so?
Is the income of all foreigners in China exempt from such nefarious levies? I ask because...

I, too, am shortly off to the Middle Kingdom. Funnily enough, I had some kimchi and rice today, you'd have had to be there to know its particular significance, and I thought, "I wonder if I'll be missing kimchi when I'm in China?"
Korea and its attributes, never mind its failings, they do tend to stick with you, don't they? A hard place to define, and a hard place to unreservedly shy away from; may the Koreans and Korea be bless'd.

And what does your 'OG' mean? |
