Yes, the U.S. has finally taken its blinders off. The war was good for at least one thing.

Before 9/11, people never believed that terrorists would successfully strike on US soil. Now, we know it can happen, and are doing everything possible to try and prevent it.

I certainly feel safer. I know that when I take my flight home to the US, terrorists aren't going to kick down the cockpit door, and try to use the plane as a missile.

Maybe, but the number of the people in the world who want to see your head cut off merely due to your nationality has definitely increased since the invasion of Iraq.

The real cause of terror is that mideast regimes and elties encourage it. Notice there were no demonstations in the mideast when Saddam gassed the Kurds or when Khomeni killed 30,000 in 1988 alone or when Osama Bin Laden killed muslims in Afghanistan.

You like Robert Fisk more than I do.

As usual in the Arab world, everyone knew what was happening and no one said a thing. The British and American pilots flying the pointless southern "no-fly" zone allegedly to protect Iraq's minorities could clearly see the receding waters of the Marsh. The Arab regimes remained silent. Neither Mubarak nor Arafat nor Assad nor Fahd uttered the mildest word of criticism, any more than they did when the Kurds were gassed.

I am from Ohio. As the economy worsens here, it is very dangerous esp in the inner city late at night. I heard on the radio news that there was a man selling guns in the neighborhood from an ice cream truck in Cleveland.

Exactly. I would like to see the look on the faces of some of the people on here who say, "America is safe," if their car broke down in most parts of Memphis or Baltimore. And crime is getting worse as the economy worsens, even in small towns. It ain't the 1950s anymore. Hell, it ain't even the 1990s. I lock my doors at night, not because of some religious freak in Pakistan, but rather because of phuckstix in my town who use meth.

The terrorist who shot up Virginia Tech exposed how anybody can get guns in America and use them on innocent people. The Patriot Act didn't stop him and it can't stop anyone else either. Fortunately, most people are sane and want to continue to live, and do so outside of prison walls.

I have to Laughing at the ice cream man selling guns...probably a David Lee Roth fan that got a little carried away. Harkening back to what I was saying about Memphis and other big cities: I think it would be a great setting for a reality TV show. The theme of the show would be to award someone with $10,000 if they can walk from one end of town to the other with nothing more than a revolver with six rounds. A hidden camera in their cap could keep the viewing audience entertained and make sure he doesn't cheat by catching a taxi or by walking around the outskirts of the city. In Memphis, the show could start east of town on the affluent Wolfchase Galleria exit with all of the contestant's family and buddies having a Last Supper with him at the restaurant of his choice before sending him off. "It was nice knowing you, Chuck!" and so on. If he makes it to the Mississippi River alive, he's $10,000 richer. I know it's way too hardcore of an idea to ever actually happen, but that's one show I would watch, and I don't even watch TV aside from college football and porn.

Just read on cnn that a homeless man was beat up outside a grocery store in DC, knocked unconscious for 30 minutes and died as passerbys just ignored him. Stories like this everyday in our news so either its media causing this, or people becoming more desparate/violent, or a little of both. Hopefully things get better so maybe crime will go down.

Crime is definitely getting a lot worse. The elderly are getting murdered for their money and possessions around here on a regular basis now.

There's a major trend in people getting robbed in grocery store parking lots. This didn't use to happen. I guess the proliferation of ATM and Coinstar machines in grocery stores makes it easier for thugs to identify targets.

Bank robberies are on the rise too. It would seem like the risk/reward isn't favorable enough compared to, say, highjacking a trailerload of high-value freight. Yet, bank robberies are becoming more and more common.

The worsening economy and increase in drug usage, especially meth, is creating a perfect storm. I dread when the state and federal budgets get so depleted that all of the troublemakers are released and unleashed onto society.

Maybe. Or perhaps the number of sensationalist news stories has increased.
