Stapler becomes "Key Issue" at RCMP Taser Death Inquiry
Quote: |
The stapler seen on video flying out of Dziekanski's hand after the first shock was cited by Crown prosecutors last year when they announced the four Mounties involved in the October 2007 confrontation wouldn't face criminal charges.
Lawyers for the officers suggested Thursday the stapler was perceived as a potential weapon by the Mounties, and police were simply following their training.
But one witness told the inquiry that before police even tried speaking with Dziekanski, one of the RCMP officers asked another about his Taser.
"I heard one officer turn to the other and say, 'Do you have your Taser out?' or 'Do you have your Taser ready?' or something like that," Alison Kula said. |
My question is, what the hell kind of damage could a guy holding a stapler do to 4 highly trained RCMP officers? And isn't the "key issue" the fact that 4 cops killed a guy at Vancouver airport?
From reading the news, it Looks like even the police can't agree on whether this was legal or illegal use of force. Thankfully there was video taken of the incident which disputed the RCMP's initial report that Dziekanski was violent and combative with the police. |

If that video didn't come out, I'm guessing there would be a totally different version of this story in the news.

As a footnote to that, I believe it was an EFL teacher coming home from China who filmed the killing (on a camera or mobile phone). When the RCMP confiscated his memory card they refused to return it, and I think I remember the RCMP saying that they "lost" the memory card or something. I'll have to go back and look for that bit.
It wasn't until the EFL teacher lawyered up and went to the media that the RCMP returned his memory card with the video clip of the death on it.
I support the police in Canada but I'm really concerned about the lying and spin that goes on with the RCMP and other police services there. |

The RCMP and the Vancouver airport screwed up big time and are trying to cover it up. I hope that the guilty get punished and proper training is given if this situation should arise again. |
