I don't even think this is a Korean thing actually, back home if I see people eating hot cooked food on the subway, or hamburgers in the street I just think they're really scummy, ignorant types. Like when you see people taking a p*ss in the street on a Saturday night.
But I guess you can only really be rude to people by direct interaction. I wouldn't eat a hamburger in the street, ever, because I'm concerned about what people think of me. I don't want people thinking I'm a scumbag. even if I never see them again, especially if I never see them again.
So its your call of course, there is no law against it, but I wish I could put a big placqard around the necks of those foreigners who do this saying "Most of my compatriates don't display these ugly characteristics" in Korean. |

i think ilsanman was stabbing @ 1 of the previous posters who basically gave the impression that we should forgo everything we are and bend to be completely korean. it did give me a good laugh when i read it.
heres something else... i forget where and when exactly but i saw a family sitting on a blanket on a path with many others walking past and they were having lunch... it seemed i was the only person walking past that thought this was strange, everybody else paid no attention to them.. so, there goes the eating in public argument.. they were together, as a family eating lunch and nobody cared.... anyway i need massive amounts of coffee cuz bourbon gives a hangover 3 times worse than vodka

Still, you would agree with me, not a consensus opinion, correct? What does it matter who told me my "info"? If I told you I was Korean or had a doctorate in Korean cultures, would that mean you'd suddenly change your mind that eating on subways is considered impolite when it seems so imprinted on you. I doubt it. Or if I told you I was from Kenya, then you'd probably say I'm full of sh*t.
I think people are smart enough to figure this out on their own and don't need your or my opinion on this. All I will say is that in my point of view, Koreans view eating on subways (subways is the thread isn't it?) as impolite. And in your point of view, it is perfectly normal. So be it. Let other people form their own opinions from their own experiences and try not to state that YOU are correct because of information from 3 Koreans you know.
I will only say, (FACT) you WILL receive stares, second looks and glimpses if you eat on public transportation, waegookin or not. You form your own opinions about this.
Funny, I kinda thought Ilsanman's post was kinda stupid and offensive, but that's just my opinion and why I responded in that way. But that might be just me, maybe not.
I stated before, and I'll state again, I don't have a problem with people eating on subways and the like as long as they don't drip any sh*t on me or it doesn't smell like dead dog. My opinion is Koreans do. |

Butterfly, how do you make the leap from eating on the streets equals ignorant and scummy. I would not eat on the subway as it's usually busy and out of consideration for other passengers I don't feel that I have the right to subject people to the smell of my food.
However, I can't recall seeing people eating on the street as I just wouldn't find a cause for interest. I would always choose to sit and eat but it is sometimes not an option so I will eat a sandwhich as I walk to work. You, on the other hand, would go hungry as your misguided sense of etiquette along with your vanity would not allow you to eat. Do you really think you attract such critical assessment when you walk down the streets? |

from what gather i do have positive knowledge or proof. this is what i asked you to argue on... what i put forward as my positive knowledge or proof.. and the best you could do was say "hmm.. 3 koreans (now 4), they don't know squat and i do cuz i believe....."

Butterfly: Why do you care what complete strangers think of you? What a waste of time. Anyways you must know by now that Koreans treat strangers as non-people.
Psy: Why is my comment stupid and offensive? Man I wish I knew who was older so then we'd know who is right. That's a joke by the way. |

Aww, it's sweet of you to care so much about how Koreans view us and want to make a good impression, but it's fairly certain that they still think you're a big dumb waygookin regardless of whether or not you happen to be feeding yourself at the time. |

Butterfly,
Calling someone a scumbag because they are eating a hamburger on the street is pretty harsh don't you think?
You're a snob. |

I've been on a good many Korean buses. Whenever the bus stops at a rest area, at least half of the passengers climb back on with food in their hands. So no this is not a fact. Maybe on the subway, but not on buses. |

Intercity buses are different from buses inside the city. A bus from SEoul to Daegu eating is acceptable - though I hope you don't bring stinky food on.
On a bus from Myong-dong to shinchon it is not acceptable. |

As long as my students will stop bringing in the brown dried squid that stinks to high heaven... I'll let anyone else do as they please. The kids eat that stuff up like it's going out of style. |

Maybe you could ask them to send some to psgarp or tsgarp or whoever it was that had a hard-on for the stuff and can't get it now that he/she/it's not in Korea anymore. |
