|

I'm coming up to renewal time again, and just discovered my passport has gone AWOL. I've been to the police and ordered a new one through my embassy, so not a big deal. But I'm wanting to go through the realitivly simple visa renewal process rather than the big old new E2 process. Will that be posible using a passport that doesn't have the original E2 sticker in? I'm staying with the same employer and have all the relavent docs ready. Any advice appreciated.
EDIT: dammit, sry for double post, my school internet was having a seizure. Mod pls delete |

No worry. Your status of sojourn is tied to your ARC and NOT your old passport.
Just tell immigration that you got a new passport when you go to renew. Make sure you have your ARC and other relevant documents. (don't forget to get a re-entry permit at the same time since it WON'T carry over from your old status). |

| I have a related question. My visa is in my now void passport, since I have a new one. I want to extend my stay in Korea for the 30 days beyond my visa exit date. Will I have any problems? |

Have you informed Immigration of your new passport?
Under Korean Immigration law, you have fourteen days from obtaining a new passport to do so. |

I did not tell immi about the new passport. I didn't know it was required. Don't you think my embassy would have told me to do that? Oh well, I have to face the music anyways. I'm going tomorrow, so if I'm not in jail tomorrow afternoon, I'll post about what happens. |

| Can anyone post a link to information about immigration rules regarding my situation? I'd like to know exactly what I'm walking into tomorrow morning. If police are involved, I want to eat a big meal before I walk into immi. |

I seriously doubt the police will be involved, but it does say you will have to pay a penalty fine.
I don't want to be a 'scare monger' but this may affect future visa applications (like an 'overstay' would) - it may mean when applying for a visa, you will be required to do the embassy/consulate 'interview' in your home country. |

The link didn't work for me, but since I'm not in jail, I can talk about what happened.
After giving my two passports, ARC, and ticket reservation to the worker, he looked them over and it seemed there wasn't going to be any issues. I asked him in Korean if people need to inform immi of a passport change and he said they do because there is a new passport number involved.
I told him that I had made a mistake and that I had not informed immi. It has been 5 months since I changed passports. He walked over to another person, exchanged some words, came back and gave me my old passport and a plastic ticket that was for me to use to pick up my ARC and new passport when they were finished with them.
I looked at the plastic ticket and on it says that people have 14 days to inform immi of changes in (1) Address, (2) Contract, (3) Passport. And people have 30 days to inform them about a birth. Then it says, "If not, you pay a fine." No fine amount was listed.
I didn't pay a fine, but that could be that 95% of my verbal exchanges in the building were in Korean. That's what I'd like to believe. ^^ |
