I'm glad John McCain hasn't given up. He tried to pass an Amendment to eliminated the clause entirely. But it failed.

Amendment to strip "buy American" clause defeated; amendment to render it meaningless passes

Of course, the original provision violated GATT.

There are no doubt groups in all countries reacting the same way: Buy Local. The Italian ban on ethnic food comes to mind. It's a natural reaction; bad, but natural.

Democrats as a party are not anti-trade, just not as gung ho as the Republicans.
