I'm really thinking about picking up a Wii later this week in Yongsan. Would need to chip it to be able to play games in English.
For those who have done it... do the games work perfectly?
And another big concern... I want to be able to play Gamecube games, too. I know I'd need controllers, etc... but the Korean Wii doesn't natively support Gamecube as it never came out here. With a modchip, will burned Gamecube games work, even on a Korean Wii? (I know they work on other countries' Wii systems.) |
Make sure you specify when you get the system chipped that you want to be able to play Gamecube games. Since the system technically doesn't support Gamecube games they need to install a loading frontend (Gecko loader seems to be the one of choice).
Burned Gamecube games of any region play perfectly on my Korean machine. If you want PAL games to play in color you will need component cables (same goes for regular Wii games). The only hitch is the Korean Wii software doesn't let you manage your Gamecube memory card from the menu. You'll never be deleting your save games, so buy a huge ass memory card. A 256mb card will save more GC games than I'll ever play and costs about 14'000won (which I found out about after they sold me a tiny-ass GC memory card for nearly the same price when I bought the system [59 "blocks" as opposed to 4083 "blocks" on a 256mb chip] jerks). |
Thanks for the info!
One more question for you, or anyone else.
I know it's possible to brick the Wii if I use a newer game from a different region and it updates with the wrong region. So... do I have to go download a new Korean game, run it once to update things, and then I can play a US game? Or does it update online automatically? Or... what?
I've been into DS for a year now with the R4 and it's really simple. Wii sounds more complicated... doable, but more complicated. I'm kinda afraid of bricking my new console or just not being able to play any decent games. |

Yes, never, ever update your modded Wii from a different region game. It is the number 1 reason for full bricks.
You should be able to play Korean games and U.S. games without a problem. I don't really understand your question about Korean updates...Do you want an update? Why? Are you having trouble playing some games?
The current software version is 3.3K. You can check this on the system settings screen (upper right corner, I believe).
Checkout wiihacks and register if you need to. It has tons of great tutorials and an active user forum to help you. |

Not a worry at all as long as you download and run a little program called "Brickblocker" on any games you download. It basically destroys or re-writes the part of the disc image that contains the software upgrade. Wii software upgrades are few and far between anyway. The current software has no problems running any games yet released. Word is that you can still upgrade the software online if you need to for some reason, and if somehow Nintendo finds a way to mess with your system in an upgrade in the future, you can be sure the problem will be worked out by the pirates pretty fast. |

| also, you can try running the games through GeckoOS in the Homebrew channel and that should bypass the updates. |

| Wii update manager is good too I hear. It will tell you all the information of a game disc (in linux) or iso files in windows. Can patch the update with nothing too. |

I'm in the US right now.
Is there any special reason why I should pick up a US Wii and take it to Korea?
If I can get the Korean Wii, get it chipped and it'll play all the games, then I don't need a US Wii right? |

| I've heard that the Korean Wii's aren't gamecube game compatible without the correct chip. If that's a concern for you it might be easier to bring over a US Wii. |

system updates from different regions leads to a SEMI BRICK. you won't be able to access the system menu, and will have to wait until there is a game disc that contains a NEWER update of the correct region to fix it. But if you have hombrew channel intalled, internet connection already setup before the brick, then you can unbrick your wii with waninkokos region changer.
Full bricks are from corrupted/damaged banners or corrupted NAND. Much more complicated and if your lucky then you can use SaveMii to fix it, or else you might as well strip the wii down for parts.
I have over 90+ Wii games, 100+ Xbox 360, 70+ PSP, 3200+ NDS games on HDD and live in Busan area. I also have emulators, dvd movie player hack, tons of wiiware, VC, and other stuff. Send me a pm if interested. |

Got a Wii. Trying to figure out Virtual Console/WiiWare. Got the Wad Manager working, but seems like all the games are out of region or something. So far, tried about 10--only one is working (Super Mario RPG for SNES). |

Should be NTSC for a Korean Wii? I mean, I know Korea is NTSC (not PAL), but I was under the impression that US ones would be out-of-region and I'd need a region-free WAD?
Edit: Think I figured it out--region changing computer program to convert the WADs from NTSC-U into Region Free. Will try it out on the Wii now.
Edit #2: Nope. Well, a few worked--Mega Man 9 and Lost Winds... but tried 10 more and they don't work, despite now being region-free. Hmm...
If anyone knows a better place to download WiiWare/VC that works in Korea, please let me know! (PM is okay if you don't want to post the link here.) |

| Alternately... I was thinking, maybe it would be easier if I convert the Wii itself to a US model. I've heard it's possible and have seen the steps to do it online, but I was wondering if anyone else had done it, and if so, did it go smoothly? |

Good luck with that.
I'm not risking it just to get a few English menu buttons. |

I was under the impression that this was IMPOSSIBLE for Korean wii's. I know it is possible for Japanese wii's though. |
