That show's up to around 30% right now so that means that a lot of your gfs and wives are watching it all the time. Lots of high school students going to New Caledonia just for fun and calling in the helicopter whenever they want something.

title should say: 꽃보다 남자 but the board won't show it.

My wife watches it Smile

Once an english sub version is out, I'll probably check it out. Though I hear it is more of a chick show.

Based on Japanese anime, I think. First done in drama form in Taiwan, I believe. Now being done (or recently finished) in China, Korea and maybe Japan.

The hairstyles are ridiculous, but that's because they're keeping the comic theme going, and if you take the entire thing as a cartoon in real life, it's not bad.

Really, the only annoying thing about 꽃보다 남자 is that it's a continuation of the effeminization of the concept of an alpha male, and these 꽃보다 남자 guys show most of the overt signs of homosexuality and yet slip under the gaydar of Korean women (and men) and have nearly completed the ousting of the true alpha male ideal.

Might be time to buy a murse.

My wife watches it and is addicted. She's says none of them are gay. Why she likes it I don't know.

Sat in a restaurant last night bemused at the absolute silence as every single table and all the servers were glued to the screen. The sound effects were ridiculously loud too.

It was really popular as a Japanese drama - most of my middle school girls had seen the Japanese version and now I hear "F-4" thrown out alot (the group from the show). I'm not watching it since I don't watch Korea dramas since got here but glad of its popularity because everyone knows its a Japanese show before. I thought anti-Japanese sentiment would kick in but it didn't ... there's hope for them yet.

Quote:
Boys Before Flowers Slammed For Promoting Violence

Although KBS Boys Before Flowers have attracted quite a following judging from the fanfare and ratings, it has also been labelled as "lousy" by some. But the ridiculous storylines recently have led to an even bigger dispute over it.

Since the group bullying scenes in episode 1 of Boys Before Flowers, subsequent episodes have come under fire from netizens. Although the scenes did happen in the manga and the Taiwanese and Japanese drama adapations, many Koreans can't accept it for fear of copycats in real life. The criticism intensified with the latest episode shown on the 9th where scenes of attempted rape, kidnap, violence and imprisonment were played out before the viewers eyes. The whole episode felt like a bazaar where all sorts of violence were on display.

The episode itself was quite bad in terms of storyline in the first place, kind of disjointed from last week. Geum Jandi decides on earning some money by going to a dubious entertainment company called Enjoy Productions where the perverted CEO and assistant takes pictures of her in cosplay outfits. Jandi finds something wrong when she is given a over revealing outfit and is nearly raped by the perveted men. She is rescued by Min Jae Ha (Jung Ui Chul) but Jandi is in more woe as the earlier was just using her for revenge against Joon Pyo for causing his elder brother distress. It's strange to see someone (Jae Ha) step in so easily between Jandi and Joon Pyo with such relative ease and causing issues.

Jandi is thus subjected to a series of attempted murder attempts via a falling flower pot, trapped in a gas filled school lab as Jae Ha tries to convince Jandi that Joon Pyo is a bad man for doing this to her. But Jandi doesn't believe him, holding on to the belief that Joon Pyo is really kind-hearted in nature. For his revenge though, Jae Ha knocks out Jandi and imprisons her, calling Joon Pyo to come alone to save her as we end there.

Some netizens expressed their concern, "Many females are already pretty apprehensive over the case of serial killer, Kang Ho Soon who had killed and buried six women from December 2006 through last month in the southwestern area of Gyeonggi-do province. With so many students of all levels plus even small kids watching the drama now, is it appropriate to include so much violent and kidnapping scenes", "The violence should be toned down in the Korean adapation", etc.

Regardless of the bad press, Boys Before Flowers continued to lead the pack with another new record of 31.5%. MBC East of Eden got 24.4% while SBS Terroir managed 7.1%.

Fads in Korea never cease to blow my mind. I first heard of this show yesterday. Today, at least four different students from different classes throughout the day have asked me if I knew about it. One class was watching an episode during a free period. I just ran into this thread now. The Korean speed of conformity is mind-boggling.

I watched the Japanese live version (花より男子) on aznv.tv a year or so back.

Another one of those cheesy, guilty pleasures I get from watching J and K dramas.

edit: For language learning purposes only...

Wait, I'm not sure what you're hinting at. This show has been quite popular for over a month and there was tons of hype before its broadcast date due to the popularity of some of the cast. I can't see how this is different than any other highly-anticipated show and its popularity. For me, it's just like...Dawson's Creek or whatever else was huge when I was a teen. The boys weren't into it but the girls would talk about the episodes constantly during class.
