I'm not Jewish, but I was thinking the other day about the Jewish population and the number of temples in Seoul...does anyone know the stats? |

Synagogues
Prior to April 2008, the only location for Jewish services was on the military base. Jewish Services of EUSA. A military chaplain (Rabbi Avi Weiss) conducts services on the South Post of the Eighth U.S. Army base in Yongsan, in the Jewish Activities Center Building 4100, Fridays at 7:30 p.m.
As of April 2008, there is now a Chabad of Seoul located in Itaewon. Rabbi Litzman can be reached via [email protected]. For more, go to the Chabad website at www.chabadkr.com. All jews are welcome to attend. |

It's really exciting to hear that there is now a Chabad House in Seoul. |

I haven't seen any stats, but I'm pretty sure there's only one Jewish person in Jeonju, just going by how many people have asked me:
"Have you seen the Jew?"
and
"Have you been to the Jew?"
or sometimes
"Did you like the Jew?"
In fact, I've been asked so many times, that it's becoming standard routine to say, "If I were to meet this Jewish person, and perhaps I have, then I would treat him or her the same way as all other persons, or at least I would seek to do so. Whether I like this particular Jew or not has no bearing on my attitude toward Judaism or Jews in general, so I don't see the relevance of the question..."
At this point, they generally back away , and most importantly stop asking me about the Jew, which I find borderline racist or a type of religious persecution...

Always been curious why they call it "jewelery" and "jewel". Is there a connection? |

ha ha! i teach a class for students heading abroad to study at my university every semester, and we inevitably need to cover the difference between 'zoo' and 'jew.' the concept usually takes quite awhile for the students to grasp.
on a more serious note, glad to hear that there will be a more official jewish presence here in seoul. perhaps koreans will learn that there's more to being jewish than financial saavy. |

Yeah, I remember doing a double take the first time I was asked "Do you like to go to the Jew, teacher...?" |

Bahaha!
I've met a few Jews here, but all have been notably non-religious. |

I had the weirdest nightmare last week...I was in the X-Men, and we were fighting the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants, and it was my job to fight the Jewgernaut. He was accusing me of anti-semitism, and kept on making these stupid puns about Judaism. It was really pissing me off, and I kept hitting him but I couldn't do any damage.
I'm actually serious, for a change. I really dreamed that. That's what I get for falling asleep with 'the X-Men 2' on I guess. |

Lebavitchers are annoying.....
but the last time I went to a chabad house (circa 2000) I took 7 shots of wildturkey, in a row, with the rabbi, grabbed an under age girl and drove off. so I guess there's a trade off there......
try asking your students to make the sound of a bee or a mosquito - the result is rather amusing |

I have a Korean friend in Seoul who converted to Judaism. Contrary to popular belief, there IS more than one temple in Seoul. |
