The Second cartoon is satiring the recent move by Pope Benedict the XVI to remove the excommunication status of Bishop Richard Williamson. Williamson is an unapologetic holocaust denier, so we see in the cartoon many references to the Nazi party.

Forinstnace, Benedict is holding an Ancient Roman-like standard that the Nazies fouvered using only the standard has a cross instead of the swastika. Benedict also has a red arm patch which Nazies also wore, except the cross again replaces the swastika. The cloak is probably a reference to the Emperor in Star Wars because many people seem to think Benedict looks like Ian McDiarmid.

The Second cartoon probably satiring Obama's decision to start holding talks with Iran while also supporting increased involvement in Afghanistan and standing steadfastly behind Israel. We see this idea with the outstretched hand that also carries a loaded weapon. Perhaps they see Obama as having split personality, because he is taking a hard line against the Taliban and Hammas, but taking a more peaceful and concilliatory approach with the Iranian government.

I am not sure about the first cartoon. It obviously refers to the economy. Stephen Harper, the Canadian PM, recently celebrated at a Chinese New Year event in Ottawa and he noted that it was the year of the Ox and that he hoped that it indicated an upcoming bull market.

I think the cartoonists here are playing with the same idea with the Ox, and the rat likely represents the greedy bankers and businessmen that allegedly created the world economic crisis. The ox representing the bull market is giving a swift kick in the butt to the greedy rats on Wall St/Bay St etc.

Those are my suggestions anyway. I have no clue about cartoon four except to say that Thailand had riots recently. Maybe the baby represents the deposed Thai president?

Here is my interpretation of the first cartoon.

2009 is the year of ox but 2008 was the year of mouse.

2008 is represented by a seedy mouse dressed like a banker.
He is getting his butt kicked by an ox in worker's clothes.
It signifies the turn from capitalist driven year to the labourers driven year.

Because the Ox symbolizes prosperity and is closely associated with strength and hard work, I am convinced that the year 2009 will be an auspicious year to pull Korea out of its unprecedented economic turmoil.

According to this, the ox symbolizes 'strength and hardwork'. In contract, rats are known for their 'cunning' ways.

P.S. look at the url..'opinon'!
