For those of you in a PS whose contract is ending on Feb 28th and not renewing, do you still have to come in and desk-warm for the remaining 2-weeks of your contract?
Those answering with a "no" - there's no need to explain why.
If you've been here awhile and in a PS, or if you are renewing, did/will they make you come in?
Thanks! |

I'm renewing my contract so I won't vote in the poll, however...
My school is of the philosphy that every single day during the vacation I must work camps. I had a 2 week "spring" camp planned for this vacation, but obviously since I'm renewing it fell by the wayside. I'm pretty sure some teachers will be working camps during the vacation. |

So what incentive did they give you to want to resign? |

If you are coming back or not there is grad week where you teach for a week and in our district we have a vacation from Feb 19th until March 2nd with no seat warming.
Not sure about other districts. I have been here two years and never seat warmed during a holiday.
Some days during the semester my classes are cancelled and I still need to sit until 4:30. |

I'm mid-contract. At my middle school, last day of classes in Fri. 13th. On Mon. 16th the grade 3s will have their 'graduation' ceremony in the morning. I don't have to go... but I'll show up in a suit (this makes the principal very happy).
Based on last year's experience, all the teachers/staff will go out for lunch after the ceremony and I'll start drinking with the principal, v.p. and senior male teachers/administrators. Then we'll all go shoot K-pool and/or 'pocketball' for a couple of hours and move to a hof when they open at around 6:00.
I'm 'free' from the 17th through the 2nd (and have never had to deskwarm during any vacation). |

I don't know yet, so I won't cast a vote but I expect I will. I'll find out this week. |

Not to hjijack this thread..
Lot's of little things. For example, During the camps, I get to leave at 12. Sure an extra couple of weeks of vacation would be great, but I'd rather work for 3 hours and go home and than seat warm for 8hours. I get 25 working days vac+ another 10 if I renew, (so 35). While most schools in my region offer 20, so if I took my chances with another school I may just be screwing myself. Not to mention, my school gives me no hassles whatsover, is very agreeable and my overtime classes are calculated heavily in my favour.
From reading Dave's there are only 2 types of jobs that seem to exist in Korea. Type A: pays 1.4mill, shares a 1 room apartment with Nepalese refugees, teaches 190 classes a month, 1 day vacation, no sick days, no healthcare, no pension, boss steals passport and gets fired in 11month.
Type B: pays 4mill, 3bedroom apartment in Gangnam, teaches 3 classes a week, 11 months paid vacation.
Like a lot of posters, I got a distorted view of the job situation from Dave's, however, when you speak to other teachers (GEPIK conference etc) the true reality of the job situation comes to the fore. |

I'm not 100% sure if I have to go back after the graduation ceremony this Friday, but according to the youngest and sweetest co-teacher in the planet, some Korean teachers will probably come in 1 or 2 days max. My school won an award from the crazy evaluations we had a few months ago and now planning a weekend trip (that I declined). I'm really hoping it's a no for me.
I'm keeping my fingers crossed. |

I liked this a lot
I havn't bought the issue up. But I will just come and go as I please like I usually do. I still make an appearance but go out for lunch for an hour or 2 then put in an hour in the afternoon then away. It will become an issue when they say something. Which they havn't in almost a year. So I'm going to continue as usual. No camp either. Maybe I can pick up some "after schools" but I'm not going to force the issue. |

If not renewing, last two weeks are the best time to use up all your sick leave. |

No.
I have no lessons today because of graduation, normal lessons on Thursday, morning lessons on Friday, then two weeks holiday.
I am not renewing, but have to come back on Tuesday the 3rd of March, before leaving on the 4th for China for a year, at least.
After that, who knows.

I love how it's practically Friday and I barely find out now. But I'm happy! No classes, thank goodness! |

They didn't tell me there was another two week vacation starting next week until yesterday.
I had heard about it from teachers at other schools, and I asked my co-teacher about it several months ago and she told me there was no such thing at our school. But suddenly it exists. I just love Korean communication.
She also told me I have to be here every day of the vacation from 8:30 to 5 and work with her on planning a new curriculum for the new school year. She says all the other teachers in the school will be here all day every day too.
Am I being duped here? |

Sorry mate - I have just found out about the two week vacation these clowns have and I asked if I had to come in and my co-teacher said 'Of course' and I said 'Of course? Why is that so?' and she couldn't give an answer to that one and just apologized instead saying that the other teachers are on a roster and will be coming in one day during the holiday - so thats what your co-teacher meant Macca!
Just found out one of these twits are getting married and everyone (bar me ) has been invited to a lunch - Their crappy insecurities about the waygook are so transparent but I want to grip them and give them a bloody good shake and just tell them I am not responsible for their crappy, racist, inferiority complexes - what a bunch of tools! |

i feel you on that. Two of the teachers are acting in an Agatha Christie play in Sungkyungkwan Uni and handed out tickets in my presence. None for me either. |
