"Tomorrow we will have stormy weather."

Why do we not say "the stormy weather?"

I tried explaining that anytime we say what kind of weather it is, we use the zero article (sunny, fair, rainy, etc) but I don't think the student was impressed.

Can anyone offer a more lucid explanation?

I'm not sure, but it seems the same as all article usage... when the object is unique, use "the", when it's general, omit it (or use "a"). Does that sound right?

The use of "the" would imply a specific period or case of stormy weather,

as in...."the stormy weather will continue through the week".

But just as a general case we say it without the article.

Compare:

We will have stormy weather this week. - just a general case of weather.

We will have the stormy weather this week. - a specific period of stormy weather...like (the same stormy weather that Chicago is having)

Does that help... er...confuddle ya more?
