|

Hey all computer experts.
I've been putting it off for awhile now, but it's looking like it's time for me to pony up the dough and get a new laptop. I'm looking at making the trek out to Yongsan or Technomart next weekend and hopefully come back home with a brand new machine.
Here's where I need help.
* Ideally, I want something that will play the newest games with no issues (I was running into a problem on my current laptop due to the graphics card not being able to handle the shading).
* I guess with the gaming side of it, I would need something that has enough RAM for the game not to lag.
* I'm not overly concerned with harddrive space as I have two external HD's that I can fill up.
* I'd like to be able to find something that can downgrade the OS to XP.
Now here's where I think I'll run into problems. I'd like to pay under a million W for a new laptop. I'm not sure if I'm over-budgeting or under-budgeting on this as I haven't seriously looked at laptops for nearly 3 years.
Do any of you tech-heads have any advice as to what I could get for that kind of money? Also, what specs should I ideally be looking for (beyond the graphics card)?
Sorry if I'm coming off as a clueless newbie, but when it comes to computers, well that is what I am.
Any and all advice is greatly appreciated!
Thanks all! |

If you decide to use it for gaming, I think the important thing is the durability of the computer. It means I think you have to pick desktop computer. And pick with the good VGA, and Processor. Don't forget to put more fan inside, in order to keep the temperature normal |

don't go with HP.
they are notorious for heating issues and huge design flaws.
I say Dell or Toshiba, or even ASUS. |

Well for roughly 1.0-1.3 million won I found several laptops with dedicated GPUS in www.danawa.co.kr
The problem is that you want to "play the latest games with no issues." For that you'll really need a GF9600 or a 4850 and those aren't going to be cheap in a laptop.
Latest games, laptop, 1 million. Pick two. |

I third HP. Had mine for almost 2 1/2 years -- no big issues. Just helped my friend buy a new one.
I have onboard graphics, though. There were a slew of HP's last year that had graphics cards dying after 10 months or less, but they warrantied them and you could get them switched-out, I believe. It was a particular model of GeForce card only. |

HP Business Laptops are pretty much indestructable and have great hardware on them. I bought a used HP business laptop almost 5 years ago and it's still going strong. I'm using it now. |

Bought a solid little IBM number last year, very impressed and it's tough and it's also light on the lap. |

^ As he said
Thinkpad all the way.
X60 for lightness
X3000 for pure out sexiness |

I was advised to get a Thinkpad last year, as I was told they still look and feel good in few years. I used a 5-year-old model at my last school, and it seemed more modern and robust than my 3-year-old HP.
Your gaming needs will determine what Ram and graphics you need, so I suggest picking your least spec and maybe adding some for next year before checking which brands offer these specs with possible upgrades. |

Considering the design has been the same for as long as I can remember.
My old man has an X30 he lugs around as his on the move laptop. P3 processor, exactly the same as mine but he only has a nipple and no touch pad.
Must be 11 years old now. |
