Intelligent people make the intelligent choice to hold off on having kids. Etc.

The birthrate in the UK is 1.66/couple.

Damn, Great Britain, greying, getting stupider, and in bankruptcy. Think its time to lose the superiority complex?

Ha ha ha, yeah, like that has Iceland's chances of solvency of ever happening.

I think the British superiority complex that yanks very often seem to go on about is very much a myth of American Films and TV. I've heard all sorts of nonsense about the Brits from people who have never been exposed them (like my Korean students) and finally it comes out that their strange concepts of Brits comes down to what they've seen in American movies. My students were often amazed to learn I was British - "but you're so kind and happy, teacher! Not strict and cold!"

Granted there are nationalistic morons, but they've never struck me as being more disproportionate to our population than in other nations. If anything, I find the Brits are generally fairly modest and humble and prone to saying negative things about their country. It's the yanks who wank on about the US being a light to other nations and all that sort of bollocks. On quite a few occasions I've had to sit and listen to some horrible yanks, really full of themselves, really swallowed the nationalistic propaganda crap about the US being the greatest nation on Earth, and just quietly bitten my tongue and waited for my escape... Fortunately, I've also met some great septics, of whom I am rather fond.

If you've met Brits having a go at you for being a yank, you might not have understood that they were taking the piss - a national sport of ours. Or they might have just met one too many stuck up yank, and thought they'd take a pot shot.

When you wrote that post, it surely never occured to you that I might be taking the piss out of you.

No, I guess I'm just too American to figure it out.

Seriously, Big Bird, I know the British style quite well. But from your response, its quite clear who's feeling inferior tonight.

Kuros, you do yourself a disservice. I knew very well you were teasing. I don't think you are as au fait with the Brits as you pretend. Razz

Big Bird, one minute you're denigrating Australians and New Zealanders with a snide remark about antipodean emigration to the UK. The next minute, you're pontificating on why Americans think Britons' have a superiority complex. My brother and his wife hold Ph D's and work in the UK as large nations such as those in the EU, and US and UK, hold more opportunity for ' uppity colonials' than back home. But, anyways, back on topic ...

I don't think immigration has much to do with it IMHO. Take Australia, for example. Over the past two decades, 1st or 2nd generation Asian-Australians and to a lesser extent European-Australians have consistently outperformed more established Anglo-Celtic Australians. This is largely to do with their parents working hard in the hope their children achieve better and move up the social ladder, as in Western countries it's not 'who' you are, it's 'what' you are that makes us a success. In doing so, the parents transplant their strong work ethic and focus on education onto their children. Whereas mainstream Australians tend to be more lackadaisical about work and study - and just about everything else. Wink

Think of a Korean mother who moves to Melbourne, she's not suddenly going to stop her educational push on her children and just be content with them playing cricket and Nintendo all afternoon.

I'd put it down to more individuals of lower IQ and/or low motivation to improve their lot in life having more children than those of higher IQ and/or higher motivation to succeed. Back home, 9 times of out of 10 it's the single mother on welfare having more kids than the university educated career woman. Generational welfare largely exists as the children born into such households have little or no role models to look up to as most of the adults in their family do not and have not ever worked. Not a nice observation to make but anecdotally it's often true.

Doesn't the research also shows a drop among middle class teenagers?

Yeah, it does. I overlooked that. I guess in that case, I'd also lay the blame at TV, the Internet and computer games. Kids don't read as many books as they did in the past and TV's got worse over the last 20 years if that's possible!

This is true in many countries. Have other countries seen a similar drop? Maybe Britain is heading the way. I blame mobile phones and ketchips.

To be fair, if I was from Kentucky I'd be a bit resentful towards people who have an accent that women find attractive too.

I was born on the East Coast. Ages 1-4 in New Jersey, ages 5-11 in Maryland, Ages 11-14 in New Hampshire, Ages 14-17 in Maine, Ages 18-23 in Maryland, Ages 24-26 in Korea, Age 26 in China, Ages 27-28 in Kentucky.

I guarantee you my uniform American accent > your British mangling of vowels.

Fill me in ... I have a feeling you're Aussie, or maybe a Kiwi, and just made that remark as a laugh.

Either way it doesn't matter, no worries.

From my time in Korea Id say Americans have a far bigger superioritiy complex than Brits. Always always going on about how great their country is, how everything is better than Korea. Most of them were lacking in any ability to take the piss out of themselves. A lot of the time I wondered why they even bothered to leave their country.

The problem with Brits is that they think theyre different. The eccentric Englishman thing. We take the piss out of ourselves and each other all day long but there is an ego in it, we dont think we are better than other countries but we think we're unique to the world when it is obvious that we arent that different.

I hate the cliche 'British humour is the best in the world', fucking really annoys me. I meet lots of people everyday who have a rubbish sense of humour but think theyre funny. Plenty of Americans have a much better sense of humour than a lot of Brits. Also, how the *beep* do you know it's the best in the world? You dont know any other languages so you can only understand about 10 other countries sense of humour, you fucking idiots.

Also, Brits think that taking the piss is also a uniquely British thing when clearly it isnt. More than Americans maybe, but not more so than many other nationalities. The kids at my school in Korea were constantly taking the piss out of each other.

If you spent anytime in Britain youd realise how much people moan about how rubbish things are, and realise there isnt actually that much of a superiority complex. But then spend some time in a country with a similarly shit climate and youd realise theyre the same as us.

I dont agree that we're getting stupider, but that we are stupider than we realised in the first place. There are some very intelligent people but that is the same in every country.
