I'm looking at my friend's contract and it states that because she is getting hired as an hourly teacher, she isn't entitled to pension, health insurance, and severance.

I thought all schools hiring teachers on E2 visas have to supply those benefits.

She is getting paid 2.8mil KRW though so it doesn't seem so bad.

By the way, the company hiring her is CDI - Daejeon.

Does she get an apartment? Sounds fishy to me. I think all the above listed is required for an e2 hire but i could be wrong. Maybe she should have a look at the Korean labor law and/or contact efllaw and ask there.

Anyone got a definite answer on the pension, health insurance, severance pay issue?

This is the general deal with CDI. They generally dont supply anything, but if you want to work your arse off, you can make a fair bit of money. One friend of mine has made 5 mil a month at times, but she did nothing but work, eat, and sleep. The latter she had little of.

Your friend will be classed as an independent contractor. This is illegal because the school must sponsor the E-2 visa; and therefore, under K-labor law, the employee must have: pension, NHI and be entitled to severance (with completion of a 12-month contract). CDI 'gets away with it' because they can - people don't realise it's illegal.

Your friend WILL be 'ripped off'. Tell him/her to find another job.

I told her to check to see if the airline will refund her ticket(or at least most of it). Worst case, she comes here and stand her ground with the contract.

I recommended to her to refund her ticket and take the JET program in Japan. It's the most highly recommended programs I've ever checkced out, mostly I think cause it's government sponsored recruiting and they pay pretty well. Only problem is the application process can take quite awhile.
