I'm in the US. As far as requesting the background check, do I just call or go to the local police station and ask for just that? I have no idea how common a request it is for someone to request a background check of themself, so should I expect them to know what I'm talking about? Is there something specific I should ask for?

Also, once I have the CBC in hand, I'm wondering about getting it notarized before taking it in to get apostilled. I mean, what exactly are they notarizing? My signature on the background check? Thanks.

Ashcroft - I was in the Boston area. Just call your local police station and they will hook you up. I had to send in an application with fee. They sent it to me via mail. Then you have to go through all the B.S. - Notarization, apostille etc. Hold off on the apostille untill you get everything needed for that process. I believe your diploma is the only other document.

Joe: A notary/apostille for the diploma, too? I thought I only needed it for the CBC.

Just call up your local cop shop. They will know exactly what you are talking about. The state level is another option: http://www.nh.gov/safety/divisions/nhsp/ssb/crimrecords/faq.html#A1

As far as the diploma goes, it depends on if you are planning to send off the original or not. You can send an Apostilled copy in lieu of the original.
