The wife and I were thinking of either going to a resort in Saipan, or heading to Tokyo Disneyland, but after doing to currency conversions, it because abundantly clear that the price was just not worth it... I mean really not worth it.

I said no, but it's because I wouldn't have enough money for a vacation even if the won was back where it was last year. |

I'm heading to Seoul at the end of the month, so I want the Won to tank some more actually! |

I'd walk around school and make jokes about vacationing in Dokdo (in the winter) or setting up a tent in my co-teacher's appartment, because of the "VALUE" of the won.
They initially thought I was serious about Dokdo!
then I'd just comment how I'm working "for free" now due to the exchange rate.
but ultimately, I'm actually going on an extra unplanned vacation - because there is NOTHING that keeps you more sane in Korea, than getting the hell out of Korea.
Savings be damned. I'll just save a little less this year. |

when i re-signed, i vowed i would take a trip during Christmas, Lunar New Year and Chuseok..
while i reserved a flight well in advance (at least 6 months) for ALL of those holidays i still could not pay the incredible price hike they were requesting compared to the previous year (2007)..
worst luck ever.. |

Yes, the weakening won makes it easier for me to visit Korea. Three more weeks and I'll be able to eat cha chang mein at all hours of the night. |

No impact on my travels last year.
This year? Oh, perhaps. I might fly steerage this time around and donate the savings to the Home for Wayward Korean Girls & Fallen Supermodels.
Or, the other scenario:
1. Won comes unglued. Further.
2. Economy shrivels. Further.
3. Choice northern Seoul homes of booze-, drugs-, hooker's-addled chaebol grandsons hit the market. Again.
4. Guru gets antsy, pulls in more funds. Again.
5. We spend our holiday time remodelling & relandscaping. Again.
Though that doesn't seem terribly likely. I mean, there simply aren't that many desirable properties in northern Seoul that, ya know... I don't already own. |

No, because I chose to put half of my savings in U.S. currency a while back so the recent currency fluctuations didn't affect my decision to go to Guam for New Year's.
Who'd keep large amounts of savings in Korean currency other than a Korean? (if you, well then, you reap the fowl harvest you've sown) |

Except now it's best to keep it in won, if the currency has bottomed out (and I sure hope to hell it has). |

Jesus, I've only been here 10 months... People who think 12m won is a "large amount" of savings have far worse problems than currency fluctuations. |

ah, you're a NEWBIE, ... well then, you have nothing to worry about, as you haven't had time to save anything substantial
my post was about those of us who've been here long enough to have savings big enough to worry about currency fluctuations
if you haven't much money then the changes in exchange rates really is a minor loss/gain for you |

My savings has been going into securities every time the Dow goes below 8000. The cash I've built up here is gravy... I didn't intend to save any money here, there just isn't anyplace to spend that much cash. |

Travel? What travel? I haven't been able to save a DIME this year. Each month we have around 2-300K won left to our names. A fouled up boiler system has left me standing with 400k/month heating bills that my public school refuses to help me with. They keep blaming them on my inability to adapt to Korean culture. That AND the tanking won means I have NO savings whatsoever!
I cannot even afford to start my Thai wife's visa process(coming in at over $1000 USD?), so we have no choice but to live apart or search for other jobs abroad... |
