Fads in Korea never cease to blow my mind. I first heard of this show yesterday. Today, at least four different students from different classes throughout the day have asked me if I knew about it. One class was watching an episode during a free period. I just ran into this thread now. The Korean speed of conformity is mind-boggling. |
Wait, I'm not sure what you're hinting at. This show has been quite popular for over a month and there was tons of hype before its broadcast date due to the popularity of some of the cast. I can't see how this is different than any other highly-anticipated show and its popularity. For me, it's just like...Dawson's Creek or whatever else was huge when I was a teen. The boys weren't into it but the girls would talk about the episodes constantly during class. |
Astonishing. |

Oh God!!!
Thankfully my wife has similar tastes in TV programming to me. ie. She hates garbage TV and likes CSI
I am still tortured with that and every other 'drama' my sister in-law and mother in-law can fit into their day.
Shoot me in the head is a common utterance in the living room! hahaha |

^haha.
Korea and its prissy dramas and male "heartthrobs" made me homophobic, and I'm gay. Seriously.
To all K Queens, tone it down a notch!

Yeah, I still don't get what you're trying to prove. The show is popular. You found out about it a day ago. What's the point? |

Guess then I have to consider being a gay... I am not attracted at all to most guys that are on TV these days, no matter they are flowers or super duper juniors or their bang is really big.
Am I abnormal?
God, if I had a son, I would never ever let him watch these crap (I am sure he would like it if he watched ). |

the troublesome thing about this show for me, more than the bad hair, is the way English and westerners are depicted. the four boys are supposed to be the cream of society, sophisticated, rich, etc. and they are shown having private English lessons with a handsome, well-dressed whitey, who is lecturing about Cocteau. The boys are also shown reading English newspapers casually, as is their mother. But english has no real purpose in their life beyond the one guy who is constantly spouting hip-hop idiocies at inappropriate intervals and the playboy who uses English once to flirt randomly with some western girl. oh, and there are three highschool girls with English names, and they occasionally (randomly) spout English as well. but while you can tell they obviously connect English with some level of Korean rich people elite sophistication, it is more of a joke than anything. Westerners are occasionally shown in the background when the rich privileged Koreans have a party or are attending certain events, but they aren't interacted with on any meaningful level. they are just there to make the Koreans look cool.
The show also namedrops a lot--Diana, Audrey Hepburn, various foreign designers are mentioned, "exotic" locations like Paris and New Caledonia and Sapporo and so on, and while one character makes a mention of the importance of opening one's mind to the world and broadening one's horizons, it is really just a mockery when the biggest example of a broadened horizon is the one guy who thinks it's cool to spout "yo yo, yokshi, ma bro!" to his friend. |

Has anyone noticed that whenever there's an interesting Korean movie or TV show (e.g. Old Boy, 200-Pound Beauty), it's often based on something Japanese?

So what was Dawson's Creek's appeal? |

the original comics were classic of the shoujo genre. the anime was also a great watch. Japan also did some good adaptions of it into a couple of live drama series and now the Korean one I am hearing is quite good. If you are down with checking this out, I highly recommend http://www.d-addicts.com for getting subs of this series and many other Asian dramas. The show and the comics itself center around a girl with little money and coming from a rather modest background who through scholarships and the luck of the draw is sent to go to a High School full of rich kids. In other words it is a lot like 90210 in that regard, but when it does succeed in my opinion is when it captures the cultural and differences in mannerisms between the lower middle class led and her numerous wealthy suitors. What is a bit of a minus is that it can degrade into a bit of a female harem fest, but the lead girl is interesting enough in that she is a very tell like it is person. |
