Hi Everyone,

Is it a good idea to get traveller's insurance before you leave for Korea? My wife and I are wondering if we should buy insurance just to be safe, or if it's a waste of money?
I understand that our medical insurance in Korea won't kick in until we get our ARC's but I want to know what everyone else did in this regard.

The agent gave us a quote of $1585 annual (has to be paid before we leave) which will cover both of us.
Should we get it insurance or what?

thanks!

That's an interesting question. You'd probably want to speak with an insurance agent and explain your situation. And then they can point out the benefits and any loopholes or clauses that would void your coverage.

Does anyone on Dave's have traveller's insurance, what does it cover?

Yes! Korean medical insurance only covers 40-60% of medical expenses. The rest is out of pocket. Also Korean health insurance will not cover the expense of being repatriated back to your home country if something serious were to happen to either of you.

To me at least $1585 seems like a lot but I'm told for somebody from North America it may not be that expensive.

yeah it is a lot especially when you have to pay it all upfront before you leave!

basically it would work out to be $800 for me and the same for my wife. this is the 'classic RBC plan' for anyone who is familiar (we're canadian btw). not that much per month and in the big picture will save some headaches but quite a sizable chunk to be throwing around just before i leave the country. i guess i can say goodbye to my income tax return!

anyways, thanks for the replies so far. hope to hear/see more.

international health insurance from AMEX would be better - cost me about 980 pounds to get it last year for the wife and I.

Very good coverage.

Travelers insurance is supposed to be cheaper than that, I thought. Judy from AIG insurance told me that travelers insurance from home is a better deal than buying it here, although she can sell it to you here.

I think you should shop around.

You could try these sites. I was having a look recently....Good idea to find someone you know to help you through all the folderol though...I'm told Lloyd's is a reliable insurer. These sites do offer some fairly good information as far as I can tell. I haven't made a call yet.

The other thing to consider is whether you are going to partake in any hazardous activities while in Korea (like walking on the sidewalk or crossing the road at a crosswalk) or while on holidays in another country (Assuming you have any) like diving or riding a motorbike in Vietnam, Thailand or an unexpected event like being taken aboard by the Vogons (as happened to me - wretched race!) etc.

Worth the peace of mind.

Good Luck. Happy Trails...

I was getting quotes for about $300 for the year, you should definitely shop around a bit more.

i use this one as well. It cost me about $200 for 6 months, with pretty comprehensive cover.
$1500 is WAY to much, you can get a lot cheaper.
