You can't generalize. Take it on a person by person basis, I figure. I wouldn't want anyone passing judgement on me based on the colour of my passport.

Spot on.

You might get lucky and work with some good people, or you might not. Why generalise about a whole nationality based on your own limited social interactions?

Cos it's fun. In my experience..Irish people get on my back if I don't say everything the way I say it in Ireland..way too desperate to hold to some kind of Irishness. Canadians are way too proud of their country..creepy..but generally affable..almost naive. Americans are more varied than any other country..i tend to like southerners more...generally cos I can talk football. British humor is vicious at times..i like it but it can turn some people off..the wierdest people i've met here have been english but that is a small sample. Aussies..generally annoying and loud. New Zealanders I've only met a few..seem nice. South Africans..massive racists. kidding.

Interesting. Normally Aussie people are pretty quiet unless they are drunk, at the sports or a woman. Aussie men are usually pretty quiet. Can't say the same about the women though. North Americans are so much louder than us.

I posted this after having spent a weekend hanging out with a group of each, respectively. Of course generalisations are problematic, but I find that if you're hanging around with people you've just met, Yanks tend to be more affable, especially if they're in a group. But if it's people you've already met I tend to feel more comfortable around Brits. I also tend to be a lot more comfortable around older Brits than older Yanks. On the other hand, some younger Englishwomen these days can be unbelievable airheads whereas it's still possible to have a very intelligent conversation with many American women under 25.

I think it depends for the most part on the individual. There are certain specific traits that most people from a particular culture may have, but there are usually bigger traits that vary from person to person. My first year here, my closest western friends were Canadian, Scottish and American. I'm an American, and now, most of my closer foreign friends are American. This however, has more to do with a worldview and set of interests which aren't nation specific. My friends and I are all left leaning but not tree huggers. None of us really get into watching sports, we all enjoy reading, and we all enjoyed partying in our younger days.
Personally, when having a drink with friends, I'd rather be discussing Star Trek minutiae or Herzog movies than rugby, basketball or baseball.
As for coworkers, my best ones were Canadian and American, while my worst ones were also Canadian and American.

I admit to a couple of recent somewhat anti-american posts... but this was primarily influenced by a current US coworker who just so happens to be the perfect stereotype of a 'merican' away from 'mom and pop'.

"why don't these ****** ***** here speak ******* AMERICAN???? What's up with this ******* country. Wait until ******* Obama bombs the **** out of them". (edited to remove the words I assumed the swear filter would have taken care of...)

And yeah, i know, that particular numbnuts does not provide a true indication of americans in general. I have worked with many septics over the years and many have been pretty decent. However, many have also been complete tools.

Same goes for every other nationality. Kiwis are generally pretty laidback, but often strangely... somehow.... annoying. The tortured vowels does make one's ears bleed on occassion. Canadians generally friendly, if a bit goofy. The brits... generally ok if not the the soccer hooligan breed. South affa's?.... ahhhh...well.... all the black south africans I've met overseas have been great. Not saying anymore than that. Irish.... usually harmless and often fun... just unintelligible. Aussies (my own countrymen)? What another poster said. Unfortunately we do have our full quota of dickheads in our country.... and the women DO have a habit of being loud. Can you hear high pitched screams and raucous laughter in the background? Something akin to the sound of the lovechild between a hyena and kookaburra on crack.... Chances are you have an aussie female in the midst.

In general, the best forigners to work with are those that leave their country behind at the immigration counter. A good clue is if somebody says "I'm from (america, australia, england etc)" and not "I AM (american, australian, english etc)". A subtle distinction, i know. Usually the biggest dickheads have been dickheads due to their overt nationalism.
