We are curious about the cost and ability for foreigners to rent a car for weekend trips and shopping.
Which is better, bring our compact car to Korea or rent one whenever needed?
Let us know. |

| Renting gets expensive. My guess is that shipping is expensive too. I'd recommend buying a used car when you get here. You will find many decent and reliable cars here for under 1 million won. |

How often do you want to rent a car? More than three or four times? Then you might consider buying a small car. And, needing a car for shopping? Why?
Anyway, it sounds like you want to drive while you're here. You'll need an international driver's license. Pick one up before you come. |

Fair enough. Depends where you live though. Sometimes a car can be more trouble than it's worth. OP, you're going to have to get here, get situated, and then sort it out on the ground. At the minimum, get an international DL. |

It's funny how different the songs I hear about this are. Some folks make it sound like such a difficult task and others just do it. I'm glad I don't have a car anymore but I can understand wanting one.
Sorry.. this was pointless (daddy needs an avatar) |

depends on where you are - avg is 60,000/day last year but maybe more now - plus insu is 30,000 and up (this is in seoul)
you can use a K drivers license but have to be here to get one
intl license, ok
traffic law is funny here -others have posted even if it's not your fault you may be liable for some payments in accidents.
I agree just come first; buy later don't rent - way too expensive - taxis are cheap - you can cross seoul on 10,000 won or less |

It's not quite that expensive where I live. If you choose one of the big rental companies and register as a member on their website, then make your reservation by internet or phone, they give you a discount. For a 24 hour period you can get a compact car for around 40-50 thousand plus 10-20 thousand for insurance. Rent a diesel and you won't have to pay much for fuel. Say two of you are going from Seoul to Busan (the OP said "we" so there's at least two of them) - bus tickets there and back will cost you 100 thousand. Go on the KTX and it would probably be 180 thousand to get there and back. Renting a car is definitely worth considering. |
