Note: This is unconfirmed, so if I am wrong, I blame my source.
I read somewhere today that starting 2009, Canadians marrying internationally and having children overseas DO NOT automatically qualify for citizenship anymore.
If the exchange rate isn't enough of a kick in the balls for living here, this is. I am super lucky we had a daughter, and I hope she got under the wire for these new rules, should this be true. Anyone having a son might want to consider getting out now. |

I think you mean the kids aren't automatically granted citizenship. There was a thread about this a couple weeks ago or something. |

So what's going on here? I'm pregnant right now and never thought there'd be a problem getting citizenship for the kids. Any links or updated info? |

They're not granted, but they have the right to apply for it. According to my source, not anymore. They'll have to apply on a different basis.

I just found this: http://www.cicnews.com/2009/01/canadian-citizenship-rules-change-born-canada-01697.html
As of April 17, 2009, Canadas Citizenship Act will be amended. The new law now limits Canadian citizenship to the first generation born abroad to Canadian citizens.
All individuals born in Canada are granted citizenship, as are people born abroad who undertake the Canadian citizenship process and are approved.
Previously, individuals who were born abroad to Canadian parents were granted Canadian citizenship and would apply for a citizenship certificate as evidence. The new law alters this.
One of the elements of the April 17 amendments to the Citizenship Act restricts the granting of citizenship for children born abroad to Canadian parents. Now, only the first generation of children born abroad to Canadian citizens will be accorded Canadian citizenship.
Once the law comes into effect, children born abroad to Canadian parents in the second or subsequent generations will not become Canadian citizens automatically at birth. Moreover, those who are born abroad in the second or subsequent generations before the new law is implemented, who are not already Canadian citizens, will not automatically become a citizen under the new law.
I find the information confusing. Does anyone know what's going on? |

If you are a Canadian citizen, born in Canada and you have a child while living abroad your child will be able to get Canadian citizenship through you. However, your child's children will not be granted the same right if his/her children are born outside of Canada.
At least that's the way I read this info.
My children should be ok obtaining Canadian citizenship. However, they won't be able to pass that citizenship on if giving birth outside of Canada.
Canada sparkling!! |

BECAUSE there are too many people around the world who hold a Canadian passport and don't have any connection to Canada. Yet, when they need help, they come asking. Example, Lebanese evacuation during wars with israel.
This is a "yeller issue" with a lot of bigoted conservative Canadian voters. So, bigoted PM Harper is "doing something". |

I don't see why it's bigoted that we don't want these ball and chain freeloaders anymore.
I guess my daughter will have to have her kids inside Canada. No problem. Thanks for the info. |

like such a measure will do anything to stop the freeloaders from freeloading. they can simply give birth in Canada and then leave if they can afford to fly over. so the only thing it might do is discrimiate the poor freeloaders from the rich ones. |

That Lebanese fiasco was a disgrace.
Good law, makes sense on most levels IMO.
Common sense prevails! |
