Quote: |
A husband working overseas was divorced ``with mutual consent'' but only learned of the divorce after he returned home.
The husband, identified only as Lee, 39, left for Dubai in March last year and returned home last month. When visiting his parents-in-law, he learned that he'd been divorced by his wife, Park, apparently by agreement, Oct. 24 last year, according to the family register.
If a couple wants to divorce by agreement, both husband and wife are required to present themselves at the court and show their willingness to divorce to the judge. But Lee was in Dubai Oct. 24. Immigration Office records also showed that Lee was not in Korea.
According to the Seoul Family Court, ``the husband'' agreed to pay 1.3 billion won in compensation and three million won monthly in living expenses to Park while taking care of their four-year-old girl. It was also found that Park took all of their property, worth 520 million won, following the divorce, after which she disappeared.
According to the court, the judge had followed due process and verified the couple's identity. ``If the divorce took place during his overseas stay, it's likely that someone presented himself as Lee in court,'' a court official said.
``Lee may have to file a suit to nullify the divorce. We are examining other possibilities,'' he said.
Lee filed a complaint against Park with the police Friday, and is considering filing a compensation suit against the court that allowed the divorce without his knowledge. |
So the bitch tried to take a $1 million settlement, get paid $3,000/month, and took off with another $350-400k worth of property.
Someone tell me why the judge wouldn't check the ID of the people presenting themselves in court, especially with that much money at stake? |

"I went walkabouts once, came home, and my wife was gone! I just didn't understand it!"
"How long were you gone?"
"Ohhh... about... one and a half years!" |

saying koreans suck is NOT racist. there are many things that could be said which would be racist but that isn't one of them. as a group, koreans do kind of suck. its a fact, not a racist statement. don't feel too bad- this surely isn't the only country with that problem.
as for the article, apparently the court didn't follow due process as it was found. the guy wasn't there and they thought he was. unless his wife found a guy with the same name to stand-in, which i guess wouldn't be impossible since so many people have names that are similar or the same. or if she had an id of her husband's sitting around that she gave to the stand-in. if i were to say that it would be easy to do that since koreans tend to look so similar to each other, now that could be racist. |

Again, indicative of how poorly run the judicial system in Korea is. I hope I never have to deal with them....
Saying Koreans suck isn't racist...it's a bad generalization but not racist. |

Anyway, "Korean" is not a race, it is a nationality. And race doesn't exist. Still, not the most sensitive remark. |

That would be me: I would take her to the cleaners...sue for everything back and sue the courts that let it happen. |

I would argue that they have it down to a science more than an art... |

This is a sad commentary on people in general, not just on Koreans themselves because it shows the depths that our fellow humans will go to profit off of the gullibility of others. This woman should be held for fraud and treated to the full extent of an enlightened legal system. I doubt that will happen, however, and in order for another human to save face (the judge and the justice system), I have little doubt the person who suffered through this whole process will continue to suffer because no one will ever want to own up to taking any type of responsibility or accountability.
It's easy to point fingers and condemn Koreans because it happened here, but I can so easily see this happening almost anywhere else, if someone was given the opportunity to screw over a fellow human at little risk to himself or herself, much as this woman had little risk when she filed all of this while her husband was working overseas and unable to even realize the rest of his life was being screwed over by someone he may have actually loved. |

"koreans suck" is inappropriate.
It is inappropriate in general, and it doesn't fit this thread, either. The woman in the story sucks. Perhaps the Korean judicial system sucks. But how does one get "Koreans suck" from this story? |

Yeah, this is not a statement based on a single article but rather several personal issues. A statement like this is made by people who themselves are quite lame. This is the sort of statement that prompts me to say... you know what? You're life is your punishment, I doubt there are many things that would be worse than waking up and having to be you each day. |
