A US citizen facing charges of molesting children at a California day care center has been arrested in Taiwan, police said yesterday.

Mark Lee Kaczmarczyk, 58, was arrested in Taipei on Sunday, a Criminal Investigation Bureau (CIB) official said, adding that police were preparing deportation proceedings against him.

Ma Chen-hua (馬振華), director of the bureaus International Affairs Department, said Kaczmarczyk faces six charges related to the alleged molestation of infants between the ages of several months and three years at a day care center he operated with his wife in San Diego, California.

He fled a US$2 million bail in December 2008 while undergoing compulsory treatment for sex offenders, Ma said.

CIB agents apprehended Kaczmarczyk at an apartment on Dunhua S Road Sec 1 at 4pm on Sunday, Ma said, adding that an interview with Kaczmarczyk satisfied police that he had not committed any crime during his month-long stay in Taipei.

Kaczmarczyk is being held at the Alien Temporary Detention Center in Sansia Township (三峽), Taipei County.

CIB agents had learned that Kaczmarczyk often visited a balloon shop near the Zhongxiao SOGO store in Taipei, where he told clerks that he wanted to stay in Taiwan and open an English-language kindergarten in the city, Ma said.

A female CIB agent surnamed Yan pretended to be a friend of one of the balloon shop clerks in order to win his confidence and managed to discover where he was staying.

He told us he likes Taiwan and would like to stay here to run a day care center, Ma said.

He added that the police had immediately informed the American Institute in Taiwan (AIT) of the arrest, after which the AIT dispatched officials to talk to Kaczmarczyk.

Police said AIT officials told Kaczmarczyk that his US passport had been canceled and that he would be repatriated very soon.

US authorities had informed the CIB on Feb. 6 through the AIT that a suspect on the US wanted list had entered the country, Ma said.

He said Kaczmarczyk had fled from a cognitive therapy clinic in December and left for Hong Kong from Los Angeles. He flew to Taiwan from Hong Kong on Jan. 8.

There was no comment on the case yesterday from the AIT, which was closed for the US Presidents Day holiday

Accused San Diego Child Molester Arrested In Taiwan

http://www.10news.com/news/18728762/detail.html
SAN DIEGO -- A San Diego man, wanted for molesting at least six children, is on his way back to California.

International authorities tracked him down and arrested him in Taiwan, authorities told 10News.

10News reporter, Sonia Azad, spoke Monday night with the mother of one of the young victims.

She said Mark Lee Kaczmarczyk and his wife were apparently running a day care center out of their Mission Valley apartment.

When the allegations of child abuse surfaced, the 58-year-old Kaczmarczyk allegedly bought a one-way ticket from Los Angeles to Taipei, apparently hoping to dodge prosecution.

He's in custody now and one victim's mother says she hopes he'll be put away for life.

I was shocked, she told 10News.

After more than a year of waiting, the victims mother, 10News is calling Vanessa, said, she was relieved.

God knows what else he's been doing and it's just a closure that they have him, Vanessa said.

She claims Kaczmarczyk molested her daughter while babysitting.

It makes me feel safer (hes in custody) because we didn't know where he was and he knows where I live. He was my neighbor. Kinda scary, Vanessa said.

Vanessa said she and Kaczmarczyk once lived in the same apartment complex in Mission Valley.

She needed a babysitter and saw an advertisement posted by Kaczmarczyk's wife, for "Anita's Daycare.

It seemed too good to be true, she recalled.

I was in desperate need. It was like, Oh! Great! This is perfect. She's right across the street. She had two kids of her own, Vanessa recalled.

She says she did everything right.

We actually ran their license plate to make sure that they were certified and they didn't even have a speeding ticket on their record, Vanessa said.

Then, the unimaginable.

My ex-husband noticed something in my daughter's diaper. We took her to the hospital and sure enough, they said: `Yeah, there's definitely been trauma down in that area," Vanessa said.

According to the criminal complaint, Vanessa brought her 2-year-old daughter to the emergency room of Children's Hospital.

It goes on to say... "The San Diego Police Department discovered five additional victims, children ages 2 months to 3 years. All had physical injuries.

Vanessa has one plea to other parents.

I'm disgusted. If there are other parents out there that have any question, knew him, were in his daycare, come forward. Because the more parents that come forward, the longer he gets, Vanessa said.

Kaczmarczyks wife, Anita, is also in custody.

She is being held in the Las Colinas jail in lieu of $600,000 bail.

She is charged with 4 counts of lewd and lascivious acts on a child under 14 and 4 counts of child cruelty.

That is probably what the Taiwan authorities were thinking.
