Another cool feature about the Kindle is is non-subscription cellular based wireless signal. Although you can't browse the entire web, it's still a potentially cool feature. You can access wikipedia whenever, and a few other sites. (I assume this is a US only feature, but don't know)
Like I said before though, I would not buy a product like this, but I could see how someone would want it. As I don't read enough to elicit technology like this. |

So why not make an e-reader that runs on batteries and a basic LCD? Answer: Because it's all about raping the early-adopters for profits, and controlling e-books with lawsuits and patents.

There are many devices that can read e-books. The Cowon D2, the ipod touch, the iphone, probably any non-Apple mp3 player with a video capable display...The point being, if you want an LCD based e-reader, you have options. |

There are much better offerings than the topic of that article (though they are listed in an off-hand way.)
The Stanza app for the iphone/ipod Touch is an excellent reading program. I can't say enough good things about the Touch as a reader. |

E-ink IS NOT LCD. It's way more complicated than that. I'm gunna let wiki speak for me.
"The principal components of electronic ink are millions of tiny microcapsules, about the diameter of a human hair. In one incarnation, each microcapsule contains positively charged white particles and negatively charged black particles suspended in a clear fluid. When a negative electric field is applied, the white particles move to the top of the microcapsule to become visible to the reader. This makes the surface appear white at that location. At the same time, an opposite electric field pulls the black particles to the bottom of the microcapsules where they are hidden. By reversing this process, the black particles appear at the top of the capsule, which now makes the surface appear dark at that location."[2]
Still, pricey though. |

Regardless, E-ink is not necessary when LCD will suffice for a far smaller investment.
Mark my words -- other devices will prevail and the Kindle will be remembered as merely an overpriced, overhyped flash-in-the-pan. Unless they can miraculously make it cost about 1/5 the current price, that is. |

You obviously haven't read 30 or more pages in one siting on a LCD.. Its painful compared to E-INK |

While I do think the price is very high, I don't think it's because of any global conspiracy - the technology is expensive to make (at least now). If it was 14 dollars to make the technology then every hardware manufacturer (esp.from China) under the sun would be trying to capture the market with a cheap device. The demand for these device is huge, but people are waiting for a price drop.
One of the options I like with e-ink readers is the ability to read it outside (on a sunny day) and not have to find a sheltered spot. In fact the 'resolution' should become better the brighter the day is which is converse for the LCD readers. The LCD readers have the advantage that they are more visible to read under low light conditions, but at that point the possibility of eye strain becomes greater. |

That may be true, but it doesn't matter as long as the price is too high. Especially in this economy. It's bad enough to trying to sell it when the owners don't actually own the physical books. |

Early adopters always pay a premium for new technologies. If e-ink catches on, the price will drop fast enough.
What Amazon and other companies have to do is lower the price of their e-books enough to make buying a legitimate e-reader compelling. Right now, even though it's kind of a pain in the ass in some ways, it's just better to pirate e-books and read them on a PDA/laptop/mp3 player. |

I'd like to order one (15 dollars postage to Korea) but I'm not sure what customs will do to it. Is there a standard tax rate that customs slaps onto these goods and/or is it possible to resolve fees owed with customs before it reaches Korea? |

I believe that anything electronic, not for school use, over $150 (or maybe it's 150,000 won) including shipping gets nailed with a 30 to 60 percent tax. Depends on the item.
Yeah, I know... it's insane. Welcome to Korean protectionism. |

I got a Sony PRS 505 about a month ago and I LOVE IT! I read so much on it. Perfect for when I am on the subway, train, airport/plane espiecaly
Sony Korea doesn't carry them. I got my dad to order it from sonystyle.ca and get it shipped to our house in Canada. To avoid paying the tax I got him to take it out of the box, use it a couple of times, take off all the stickers, packaging, and just send the actual unit, cd, and instruction manual. This way it was 'used' and I avoided paying the tax. He sent it via UPS
I also found out that korea has made its own version of ebook reader with the same e ink technology for 297,000 won. www.nuutbook.com
although it appears as though they are sold out presently |

I linked that on the first page of this thread. I guess people were so angry at Sony and Amazon they couldn't click the link. |
