I agree with what another poster mentioned. We have to say goodbye to money. Being enslaved to legal tender lies the ills of the world. But we can't exactly do that overnight. Too many are too entrenched in the money system.
Let me propose this idea:
We set off in a wooden boat, Captain Cook style, and head south towards the Cook Islands. We bet on ourselves instead of the broken economies of the world and take our chances. We find an island down there that's big enough to have fresh water and set up a commune.
Or we could head to the Straits of Malacca and become pirates. That seems to pay huge dividends.
I hate being a slave to money. |

Yeah, but there will always be trouble.
You've seen "The Beach", right?

Okay, point taken. I was thinking Lord of the Flies.
So you head out with a hot Asian chick in a tug. |

True - But its a double edged sword.
With the global crisis its more difficult for them to pay more.
The attraction to coming to Korea was the $$$$$ and benefits. Now the money is actually worse than some other countries and the Visa regs a real hassle for many people. So aside from a few perks there is really no huge advantage to choosing Korea in my opinion. |
LOL....
With the exasperating and difficult to comply with visa regulations, tanking currency, airfare often no longer prepaid and difficult management we have to deal with, there is NO GOOD REASON to come to Korea at the moment.
For an average wage of $1500 (or less at current exchange rates) it would make more sense to head for a tropical place instead of bearing the winter here. |
Here here, the words of wisdom wash over me.

1455 won to the dollar today.
Could go past 1500 this week or next.
Look for 1700 won to the dollar down the road.
When will all the rats abandon ship? |

Like I said before...when I earned most of the dough I paid into my pension, the won was worth at least 1000 per. Some of it was earned when it was nearly 900.
And when I get all that money back in a few months that I paid in over my two years here, I'll be able to buy a six-pack of Schlitz and a pack of cigarettes with it. That's about it.
Shoulda done a runner. I was an idiot for staying here 'til the end. I see that clearly now. Oh well. I made my decision. Now I have to live with it. |

^ Why?
You would have lost all that money and not saved the small amount you have now and would therefore be worse off. |

I would leave it here in an EverRich account, but I probably won't be coming back to Korea anytime soon. Also, I don't have much confidence in the currency rebounding to 1000 or better in the coming year(s). If I leave it, and the won stays low or even goes lower, I could *beep* myself even more. When I need that money later, I'll have to fly here ($$) to get it and accept whatever rate it's trading at. That's a bird in the bush to me. I've got a bird in the hand right now. I'll take that.
A bird in the cage would be an EverRich account with a Visa card that I could use outside of Korea. I'll check into it. |

Look into Internet banking. I know that KEB will let you do international TTs through their Internet service, and the fees are lower than if you walk in or use an ATM. |

| Will do. I'll explore all my options before I watch what was once 6,000 big bones instantly become 3500 tiny bones. I really do need to set up a Korean account like this KEB thing so I can dump my pension into it. |

Eight years ago I made 1.5 million won a month. The exchange rate was abotu 750 won to the Canadian dollar. So that meant almost $2000 per month.
Now I make 2.6 million won a month. The exchange rate is 1,150 won to the Canadian dollar. So that means about $2250 per month. I am certainly in no hurry to exchange any money, but I am not crying either. |
$13 per hour is not that decent for living halfway around the world. |
