Last summer we had a transfer in Beijing. They didn't have an international transfer waiting area. So we had to go through immigration. Immigration didn't understand why we didn't have a ticket or flight number for our connecting flight (some idiot left the eticket in the luggage.....). They also asked us about 10 times why we were in China and how long we would be there for. I pointed out that it is the flight leaving in 2 hours going to New York. We waited. And waited. And after 45 minutes I began to get testy and demand a supervisor, pointing out that the flight was leaving in an hour. Finally we were escorted, with two armed immigration officers and a supervisor, through a special screening and right to our flight which was about to depart in 10 minutes. They had to watch us get on the plane and argued with us when we demanded a smoke before boarding a 12 hour flight.
This was before the olympics, though. Good luck and I hope you have a lot of transfer time.
Damn commies... |

Dam it. Yea. Actually come to think of it they were a bit rude last time but i didnt have any problems transfering in Shanghai.
Beijing by all accounts is different.
I checked all the chinese sites and it says that i dont need a visa for a transfer to bangers. But yea these buggers enjoy pushing us about.
Well *beep* it, im not getting one. I m gona go, if they give me a hard time then so be it.
I will enjoy the experience.

have your ticket, e-ticket, or itinerary on hand to help you attain the subseuent ticket after you've transfered, as proof that you have no intention of staying in china. definitely no visa necessary. just don't leave any important documents that prove your intentions out of arm's reach.
they are particularly annoying about stuff like this. i was forced to wait in a roped-off area for 1 1/2 hours even though i had an onward ticket when transfering through shanghai back in 2007. i don't know why, but they really don't seem to have a an system in place that allows transit flyers to get from point a to b in a reasonable manner. |

Yeah, but it's a waste of $100 (for Americans) when it's not required. If you're going to stay in Beijing for less than 24 hours, and not leave the airport, and have proof of onward travel, then you don't need a visa. |

That does suck. I have seen quite a few people being told at check in that they cannot fly because they have a layover in the US but no US visa.
I hope it works out for you. |
