I've been lead to believe that the Ks are a proud bunch and that they love it here.

So do K men and women dream about living in the west? (U.S, Canada, England, Australia etc)

I thought the "Marriage for passport" thing was reserved for Vietnam or Russia, but my coworker told me that my passport is like currency here.

my coworker is actually a korean lady. she spent a couple of years studying in the states though, the pacific northwest.

So I guess that's a possible explanation for her comment.

You will find many Koreans who want to live abroad. I've found most want to stay here. I think Koreans marrying for a green card is no where near as prevalent as it was in the past.

Agreed, though I can only speak about the US. When I first met my wife I was worried I might be just a stepping stone for her, boy was I wrong. These aren't a people living in crushing poverty, dazzled by the bright lights and skyscapers of New York projected from a Hollywood film anymore. Materially there's little to be had abroad that can't be had here, and lots of the stuff we miss Koreans don't seem to want. Plus many are terrified by the spectre of violence that looms over America.

My wife hates the idea of small, quiet Canadian towns. I think she's foolish, but hey.

For the price of a nice apartment in Seoul you can have a virtual mansion in small town Canada. Jobs aren't really an issue for professionals.

Yes, but what do you do with your time? Stare at moose?

I'm in a campus in the countryside and I'm already pulling my hair out. I'm going to rent a place in Seoul and stay there on the weekends. I honestly can't fathom people who like the countryside.

I don't know if they want to get hitched but they sure as hell want out, especially the educated, professional women. A lifetime of marriage to a present day 꽃미남, who is in actuality biding his time until he can metamorphisize into a soju soaked 아저씨, is not very appealing.

I think a lot of people just want to "change their lives".

But being passport hungry? Nah, not so much.

I can't say what the situation was like during the 97 imf crisis, but my conclusion is that Koreans are very "fair-weather".

They thump their chests during prosperity, and flee during uncertainty. They trump up children's education when the money's flowing, but ditch them when it stops. They honor their elders...except when they drive them to a mountain and leave them (worst story I'd ever heard).

Yeah...now. Let this depression go for a few years.

I think most Korean girls picture themselves living like Carrie in Sex in the City. Its no wonder most of them are disappointed and unhappy when they finally do come to the US/Canada and realize people don't drink Cosmo's and wear $1000 outfits.

it would have been better for them to watch Little House on the Prairie than SATC. Hardly anyone coming back with a wife from Korea is going to be living right in Manhattan or even the urban centre of a city.
