|
|
I am an associate of someone in marketing. Recently he has behaving erratically, in an almost paranoid way. He confided to me today that he has copied some new product designs and is selling those designs to the highest bidder.
Here is the dilemma, my job is chaotic, people are sometimes treated inhumanely here. If I say something then this guy will be arrested and, most definitely, fired. I will also be protected as I said something rather then doing nothing. If I dont say anything then the guy still stays here and we have the satisfaction of knowing that this place got screwed, but I am now an accomplice.
What would you do? I must make some decision before I go on vacation tomorrow! |

You need to say something because when he gets caught, he'll tell people that you know. Remember, company loyalty is very important in Korea. |

There is no dilemma .... check "accessory" in the dictionary
Beyond that legal issue there is no dilemma on my part |

I just spoke with the bosses about this. They were really thankful and are actively watching this guy now. I am glad I did this. Actually, after I posted that, I sat down and thought real long about it. The guy who told me actually forced me to expose him by his own selfish behavior.
I have had 2 other people ask me today what is wrong with Mr.X? He is really drawing attention to himself by his erratic behavior, which includes going to the copy machine 10-15 times an hour for 1 or 2 copies. Thankfully I wont be here when the poop hits the fan! |

This episode is somewhat reminiscent of the AFN Korea spot about watching your acquaintances for unusual behavior that may be indicative or espionage. |

There was no other option. Even if he was a close friend, loyalty was thrown out the window when he would place the burden of knowledge in your lap and expect you to turn a blind eye and so on and yada yada ... don't worry over your decision ... take the vacation
Take care |

Lush72: Expect a promotion, citizenship of korea, and the gift of a new Korean wife to you on your return from holiday. You've proved your loyalty. |

Tsk, tsk - you should have blackmailed him out of half the profits. Then you could have really lived it up in Guam. Hookers, strip bars, Cristal.....that's all gone now. You blew it! |

It's a no brainer. He's ripping off the company. His actions could have a negative effect not only upon you, but others as well. You were 100% correct to speak to your boss. There's nothing worse than a thief. |

I'm willing to bet that your bosses will even reward you for your loyalty if they catch the guy. |

I thought nothing was worse than a snitch !?!
So, there's no controversy about whistleblowing around here. Is it because we as foreigners don't feel the same bonds of loyalty BETWEEN INDIVIDUALS (rather than with a company) that we do back home?
You don't turn on your colleague to help the company. That's just not kosher by the ethics of most guys I know back in Canada.
Why didn't anyone recommend: "Keep your mouth shut"?
Are you foreigners adopting the Korean value of loyalty to a company? Or do you all just happen to be on one side of the issue? |

Do you make it a habit of forcing your friends to make a career and life altering decision without them even getting to decide if they want to make that decision?
That's surely the type of friend I want. |

thumbs up for letting the 'seniors' know.
When this guy is caught he'll likely mention that you knew about it. Maybe he'll answer a question about who he told or just be spiteful and say 'yeah well ***** knew about it!"
In this situation my loyalities would be with those who pay me my salary.
About nothing worse than a snitch. That might have been the case in high school. This is business..should be a grown up world where people who steal get caught, fired, fined, etc.
Great job, you will likely be looked at in a positive light from management...and especially the department whose work this guy is stealing. |
