I need to get about 4 cavities filled before I leave for vacation on the 22nd. I live in a rural town and none of the dentists here speak English, and Mokpo is only an hour away.

So, I was wondering - do any of you have any recommendations of a good, English-speaking dentist?

Also, what are the chances of me being able to come in and get the work done on the same day?

We lived in Mokpo a few years ago and my girlfriend raves about her dentist there....she says it's the best dentist she's ever been to anywhere in the world. So hopefully he's still at the same office.

It's called Shin Woo Chi Kwa, and ask for Jay.

It's located in Hadang off one of the main roads, 3 years ago it was across from a veggie market, but Mokpo has changed a lot since then. At any rate...maybe a co-worker can look up Shin Woo Chi Kwa and give them a buzz for you.

Hm. I'll see what I can do. I don't live in Mokpo, so my only option for finding places is hoping that the taxi driver than find it.

You couldn't have chosen a better place for dentistry than Mokpo.

On the main street you can find Dr Kim Taewoo, two-time recipient of the Nobel prize for dentistry. The floor above him houses the East Asian Center for Dental Research, whose findings are both peer-reviewed and frequently top the annual list for "works most frequently cited" in science health magazine, Lancet. And there are literally dozens of other dental clinics cramming the office spaces of downtown Mokpo.

Of the 3000+ English-speaking foreigners in Mokpo who read Dave's, all of them are well acquainted with each place, and practically all of whom can be seen regularly strolling the downtown from sun up to sun down, obligingly giving directions to these, and only these, places.

Alternatively, you could write 치과 (pronounced chee-gwah), or 치과는 어디에 있어요? on a bit of paper and show it to a local.

Agreed...just write shin-woo chi kwa in hangeul and give it to your taxi driver. Surely he can make a phone call and figure it out.

Any chance that I can get you to write it out here in hangeul? I'm not that good with it yet, and I haven't seen my co-teacher in weeks.

Shin Woo is, I guess, 신우, so you could print the following:

신우치과로 가주세요 this is only for taxis "Please take me to..."
신우치과는 어디에 있어요 would be for passers by "Where is..."

I would like to share my recent, positive experience at the dentist office here in Mokpo. I saw Dr. Sumin Lee at the Yedam Dental Hospital. She is a young dentist who speaks English very well. This location is also known as Shin Woo Chi Kwa.
I only had my teeth cleaned and one X-ray taken.

The doctor does not clean your teeth that work is done by a dental hygienist who did not speak English. Dr. Lee gave her instructions and gave the results at the end. She also discussed the X-ray with me. I would recommend her to the community. The cleaning cost W50,000 and the X-ray W15,000.

The telephone numbers are284-7528 or 284-0928. I made my appointment in person. I do not know if anyone answering the phone speaks English but Dr. Lee was the only person I met who did.
