Hi Guys,

Just completed a TESOL course and will be coming out in Sept, the course however was geared towards teaching adults.

What books have you read that are useful for adapting your methodology to young learners, especially elementary level.

Thanks
Ross

no books

sure, assign some book for homework, but the best way to teach young learners is directly, with no more tha pencil and paper if that

make classes activity-focused with group work, starting off with a modelling exercise

do not try and 'adapt' methodology of teaching adults... it's an entirely different kettle of fish

sink or swim

i'm an awesome teacher of elementary school aged kids but struggle to be half-decent with middle school and high school, not bad with adults (due to my language teacher training)

you may find yourself more or less suited to kids... you'll know before long if it's for you

Basic phonics, frequency words, flash cards to start with.
You could find kid's reading books marked according to their level. You can start their. My son in the states has this series of decoder books. Does anyone heard of these and where I could find them?

thank you.

I was really impressed with how much my students have learned studying Phonics books. The kids learned the alphabet first, and within 2 months, they were building a vocabulary, correctly pronouncing all the vowels and consonants and speaking basic sentences. I only see the kids twice a week. It's incredible how quickly they absorb the material at that age.

Best of luck to you in Korea!

Five-Minute Activities for Young Learners, Cambridge (McKay & Gruse). Not a methodology book, but its lesson plans will give you a good idea on how to make necessary changes.

Teaching Languages to Young Learners, Cambridge (Cameron). Excellent methodology book and gets my vote for most comprehensive YL resource book.

I second the David Paul book and get a preview Here

You'd also do well with a lot of pictures / flashcards / ppts (which are printable and can be made into great flashcards - just click FILE - Print Preview - Slides / page - Print ).

Andrew Finch's Tell Me More is a classic. www.finchpark.com/books

See many of these books for preview before buying on EFL Classroom 2.0. I highly recommend if you have a computer/screen, using the games on the Games page (under PLAY) and the audio books (Under Teaching - Stories). Collected from around the net.

Thanks, DD. The Finch link is awesome. I already have the Paul book but you do have other (e-) books on your site, don't you?

yeremy,

Yes, look through our off site resources and particularly the EFL Books section or Activities section.

Also our Resources page has a lot - for Korean teachers, the Korea category would offer up resources as well. Tell Me More as well.

I do urge all teachers to consider buying the books which they find helpful and I think many do. This is a way to really see what is there and if you can use it enough to purchase.

Cheers,

DD
