Hello all,

I'm wondering if anyone might know where in Seoul I can buy a Dizi. it's a Chinese bamboo flute. I feel like learning an instrument and I'd like it to be portable. Also, if you know what it's called in Korean, that'd be awesome.

Thanks

They have smaller bamboo flutes in Korea called piri or pili. They aren't quite the same as what you are looking for but are smaller and more compact than a Dizi. It would probably be easy to find someone to teach you that instrument in Korea as well. That would at least give you the fundamental techniques that you would require once you do purchase a Dizi.

Hey Golem,

Thanks for the reply. Do you know of any stores where they sell them? I'm sure there are lots, but I'm still relatively new to Seoul so I have seen any yet.

Thanks again!

To be clear, Piri aren't flutes, they're double-reed instruments. They're very portable, though. They're more closely related to oboes or the instruments the Master Musicians of Joujouka play than to flutes.

Man, Wikipedia really doesn't have much on this lovely instrument:

Why is this called a flute when it is held like a recorder?

Yeah, the area surrounding Insadong, especially in the Nagwon Arcade building. For trad. Korean stuff, Nagwon might not be the answer, but the surrounding blocks will have what you're looking for.

I should have thought of Insa-dong. Thanks!

I'll post back here if I find a nice place and let those interested know how it went.

There are a bunch of music shops in this building in 인사동 (insadong) if you ask a cab driver to drop you off at 낙원상가 (nakwonsangga - name of the building) you can go up to the third floor and I'm pretty sure you can find it there. I just bought a melodica there.

Hey all.

I ended up picking up a Sogeum (소금). It's a small traditional Korean bamboo flute. I've never played a flute before so it's been rough going thus far. I've heard once you get past the "making a decent sound" stage, the progression is much easier and more rewarding. I hope so!

I found it in Insa-Dong at one of many stores in the area.

Thanks all
