I'm going for 10 days, on my way home. Never been out of Korea, in Asia. Where should I stay? Advice?
Also, any cool day trips from Beijing? |

I stayed at the hostel in the link at the bottom of my post. They are located across the street from one of the main train stations and right outside is a subway stop that will take you to the Forbidden Palace. Rooms are cheap, but buy food at the markets outside of the hostel. There are a couple cheap restaurants on the same block.
They (along with most hostels) can arrange day trips. I highly recommend you take the Great Wall tour. IT is 10+ kilometers, but it is worth the effort and the zip-line at the end is fun.
Just be aware, if someone comes up to you and starts being friendly, they want something (if you are anywhere near the forbidden palace it will be "students" trying to sell you their "art"). Also, watch your pockets and bags. They will open your pack up while you are wearing it.
Get out of Beijing for a couple days if you can, China's countryside is amazing!

If you want to spend a little coin, the suites here are nice. The location and grounds are great. There is an awesome restaurant right next door.

Right downtown near the shopping street is some nice and cheap hotels. You do not need to book in advance. You can walk to Tinaman (sp?) square from there and to the Forbidden City.
We did a cheap day trip out to the Wall. Make sure you don't spend more than 200 rmb for the wall tour. |

This is a truly great place to stay and has been around for a while. Their is so much backpacker and courtyard accomodation in Beijing now, I'm sure half of these places must be empty with the RMB being so strong. |
