Depo is my BC of choice, so I moseyed on to the doctor to get a dose of it.. only to be told that the Depo in Korea only has one of the elements needed to be an effective BC. She said it was progestin-only and needed estrogen to be effective. We went around and around about this and I asked her why on earth it would be offered at all if it didn't prevent babies. She basically said it was used by women who didn't want to have a period every month. 
Now I just did a little search and found the wikipedia page on it, which claims that ALL Depo is progestin-only! Is my doctor smoking crack? She loaded me up with BC pills, which I HATE and which were costly as well. I'm very unhappy about this. |

Actually......
I am not on depo provera but I am using mirena, which is an IUD and it is estrogen free.
I don't know about depo provera but I've always thought it WAS a type of BC. I think your doc in KOREA doesn't know what she's talking about.
ETA: progesterone is the hormone that your body produces when you are pregnant. If you are NOT pregnant, your body does not produce it, so by having a device (or a shot) that releases a small dose of progesterone, your body is constantly thinking that it is pregnant, thereby not producing any eggs. Any period you get is not exactly a period per se, but more like what they call a *breakthrough bleeding*.
This is everything I learned since I became pregnant and had my daughter just about 5 years ago! |

| Do you get periods with Mirena? I don't want to lose Depo. Does the Korean version prevent pregnancy or not? Where can I get it anyway? I will be in Paju. |

And a lot of people who are on the same BC pills became pregnant in Korea, too.
I don't want to sound bitchy but we all know that there isn't a BC method that is 100% fail-safe. And we all know what the only method to not get pregnant is.... |

Don't know if the fact that I've had a child affects this or not, Draz, but a couple of women who've had kids and are using Mirena tell me they have no periods either. |

I was responding to the first post in which the OP was told it wasnt used as a BC in Korea. Said friend had used it for years in the US.

Is that true? Why would that be? |

Wow hwarangi.. your story about your friend getting pregnant on Depo here makes me wonder if my doc was right after all... Depo is extremely effective at preventing pregnancy when used consistently Maybe the Depo here is jacked up somehow, but I can't imagine why.
By the way, why is BC so freaking expensive here??? Why isn't it covered by insurance? |

| Does anyone know where I can get Depo in Ilsan? My family sent me some, but it was confiscated, and I am due for a shot any day now. Please, please help me locate a dr or hosp that can get me the injection within the next week or so. Please, with sugar on top! I don't want to go back on the rag ever again!! |

Keep in mind though, that when use correctly, birth control is 99.6% (or so, the tenths seems to fluctuate). Usually, people who become pregnant on BC have forgotten to take it or have taken something that compromises the effectiveness of the pill.
With depo-provera, it's administered by a doctor, so unless you're drinking a shit ton of st. John's wort, it's pretty error-proof. Which means, if someone's friend got pregnant on it in korea, I'd be concerned about using it here. |

What BC are you using? You can go to the pharmacy and get Mercilon over the counter for really cheap (like less than 10,000 for 3 months). I don't know about Depo Provera, but I know that Dr Sung in Hannam-dong does Implanon. I don't find Dr Kim to be particularly rough.
With respect to DP here, I really can't see that the formulation would be different here than anywhere else. DP is a progesterone only contraceptive http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Depo-Provera. You could always check the dosage on the package before it's injected. If it's the same as the dosage on the wiki page, there is no problem. |
