Just to put the piece in some context:

David wrote, ``[Korea's] thought pattern [is] among the strangest, and its behavioral rationale among the most difficult to comprehend" and ``Korea's social structure, food, clothing, manners of living, language and other aspects of life are some of the 'strangest' the Western world has known about."

If this is an accurate description of what Mr. David wrote in the first article, I would hardly call that a standing invitation to reasoned discussion. It sounds like the Korea Times was just trying to stir up some sort of tabloid- style controversy.

The first article was indeed a piece of trash.

Look, if the "original piece" was that bad, then write the rebuttal and critictize the author's reasoning and main points. There's nothing like that in this article. This is a Korean who was looking for an excuse to bash the USA, in a Korean newspaper, while he COMFORTABLY LIVES IN THE USA, enjoying the benefits of the USA.

Americans are stupid they don't know that being in a closed room with the fan on is dangerous.

It is the fault of the US that Korea is having economic problems now.

The US is against Korea reunification because a reunified Korea would be an economic superpower that would threaten the US.

If North Korea has nuclear weapons it is good thing because they can be used against Japan.

There are no gay people in Korea or Iran.

So it is America's fault that the North invaded? Laughing

Don't you live in comfortably in Korea and spend much of your time bashing it?

I live in Korea and DO GOOD THINGS FOR KOREANS and say good things about Korea, when it's called for, and I am critical of Korea and Koreans, when the need arises.

What do YOU do?

WHY aren't YOU addressing the article? Agree with it? Rolling Eyes

Easy friend. You called the writer a hypocrite based on very little knowledge about him. I've just done the same to you. While I'm sure you spend most of your free time helping out Koreans and making Korea a better place to live, you spend a fair amount of time posting every negative article you can find.

What do I do? I spend too much time on here, that's for sure. I also teach, exercise, play some video games, watch TV, and hangout with friends. But I don't do much to help out Korea.

What tips could you give me? How do you help out Korea? I'm sure you do more than post article on a message board.

Do I agree with the article? No, I think it's simple.

This guy is there for a cash grab and to stay.

The cash is being grabbed from me alright, especially considering the devaluation of the Won. Food and everything else is increasing in price!

Why would someone want to stay here to have money grabbed from them? Other places, such as Dubai, will pay far more for teachers with 2-3 years of experience and a masters degree. That is where the real money is.

Well, I obviously have to build the 2-3 years of experience from somewhere. I have a reputable TESOL that can me transferred into a masters program too. I am also doing my best to improve my teaching abilities while I am here. I think that I am using the opportunities I have found here quite effectively thus far, don't you Ilsanman?

I know one way to help people out here in the field of education. Making people aware that the lack of quality control in parts of the education field, especially hogwons as they don't have to answer to a board of education, has caused Koreans to pay 3x to 4x more money than people in other countries on education, which while Korea ranks high in educational achievement, the country ranks an abismal 53rd out of 55 countries in educational quality.

Doing something to lower the cost of educaiton, which doesn't seem to be going to the teachers, and improving the quality of education is the greatest gift that teachers, whether foreign or Korean, could provide this country.

Why aren't more articles bringing awareness to this problem?

The author of the posted piece in the KT is plainly a hypocrite BECAUSE he claims that he has hated the USA since the Korean War yet chooses to live in the USA. That's hypocrisy. Rolling Eyes

As for the "posting negative articles about Korea"- I post whatever is printed in KOREAN English language newspapers that is relevant to expats. If that happens to be "negative" then take it up with the KOREAN English language newspapers. I don't write the newspapers. Rolling Eyes

Why do you claim to disagree with the article and then flame ME? That's what makes little sense, but, obviously you have a problem with something else I've posted on a different thread. Rolling Eyes
