Never seen you troll before. I missed the part where Americans are not talking about "race," Kuros. So I, for one, wonder what the Atty-Gen is talking about in his hyperbolic attention-grabbing speech.

Americans talk about it in universities and in academic publications all the time -- part of the pervasive "race, class, and gender" hegemony. I could cite tens of thousands of departments, classes, books, and articles on this if necessary.

Americans talk about it in courtrooms and have done so for decades. Affirmative-Action and Equal Employment Opportunities task-forces and investigations/enforcement units. Never heard of those?

Did I miss the part, moreover, where race was not mentioned in the last presidential campaign in the press and the popular discourse daily?

Did someone silence Al Sharpton, Rev. J. Wright, and a host of others on the left?

What does E. Holder want from us? "Black history month" all year round?

I am sorry but this speech takes a nonsensical position, probably in the name of nothing more noble than a politician's self-promotion...

i agree that it's ridiculous.

the african american push has been tiring for a while, for essentially the same reasons as some might say the women's lib. is tiring.

on the other hand, no one can deny that racism exists (unless you're part of the white majority) in america. it is one thing to be able to understand it academically but another to actually experience it. i am sure some of us white people have experienced it in korea; i'd wager that it is racism against whites in korea that makes a lot of people on this board angry and not @stupidness@ @backwardness@ etc...

symbols do have meaning though, and the monkey is a racist reference to black people, and if i remember correctly, the nypd officers were white (even had mustaches). was it nypd or lapd? j/k

to me it's similar to the outrage over the muhammed cartoon. when can we stop being so sensitive? point is the paper/editor ok'd it.

i still think race gender and class are important aspects of the discourse and so do people for whom it has had effects on.

Jeff: M. Freeman is dead on -- and has always been dead on, especially in his role in Glory -- and in line with MLK. All the others prefer to deal with permanent divisiveness. That was not what MLK was about at all.

I wrote "I wonder why" because I believe the answer is clear. White people don't want to be called racist, and one can be called racist for anything these days, and therefore shy away from these topics. Holder should know this.
