Not too long ago, someone in a bar (prolly a military guy) sitting behind me, said to his friends, "What we need right now is a world war, killing off millions of people - then things will get better".

Wow.

But to be negative again... A bad hurricane season, a bad earthquake in California, a terrorist attack, a nuclear accident at a powerplant.. Any of these types of things would really be a nightmare (much more so than usual). We need perfect stability. A good crop, no military crises abroad etc. The system is fragile. A soft wind could blow it over. This goes for the whole OECD and basically everybody else and not just North America.

That's occurred to me, too. Now is just not the time for Mother Nature to take revenge for past injustices and indelicacies. There was a report a couple of weeks ago about Yellowstone Nat'l Park trembling more than usual. Something like half the state of Wyoming just rose another couple of inches (I'm exaggerating). This would not be an opportune time for it to go supervolcano.

He is just repeating a pretty main-stream (ahem, krugman) idea that the big war got America out of the depression. The idea is false, but very widely held.

That's a commonly held belief. I remember bunches of teenage boys saying that when I was a high school teacher.

Im predicting the US is gonna be ok, finacne wise. Whether that equates to high living standards is debatable as you lot do waste a lot of money. However, youre still the world leaders by a stretch and I dont think thats gonna change soon.

Also, you have probably the strongest military the world has ever seen, and if you think that doesnt pay off you are naive.

I can see what he means though, in my own way. Things need levelling a little, people need to be a bit more humble.
