Never had anything stolen...

I have forgotten or lost things, including an expensive ring and a nice phone, in restaurants/bars and on the bus...and recovered them again after patrons handed them in to staff..

I do believe the level of petty theft is lower in korea but that doesnt mean there arent thieves about and that you should be stupid and carefree with your stuff.

My wife's purse has been cut open and robbed on the crowded subway twice.

My cell phone was stolen from the teachers' office. Some little crap answered it a couple times when I called, then nothing. Canceled it the next day. It was an old pice of junk.

Ha! I was just thinking about all of the stuff and couldn't believe how much it adds up to.

-4 bicycles. Yep, 4. 1 in Gunsan and 3 at separate times in Seoul

-my PSP and my IPOD from a room in a love motel

-1,400,000W in cash that I stuffed in a drawer and then went out for dinner. Stupid thing to do. Apartment was fully locked up though.

My friend was paid in cash her whole month's salary and that was stolen from her house in Gunsan.

Mind you, I've been here for four years, so spread out over that amount of time, not so bad. Still, I've never had anything stolen from me in my whole life in Canada.

When I was in high school, a Korean gang robbed our house. Really. Total losses were about $20,000 Cdn in '97.

I've never had anything stolen in Korea though.

I had a $100 bill printed in 1934 stolen from my place. It was my fault. I was moving and I called one of those moving companies that come and pack for you.

I know some of you guys get paid in cash, but why keep it lying around or hidden under a mattress? Plenty of folks mention they have $1000+ cash stolen.... Rolling Eyes

I lost my wallet in Busan. Some adjossi found it, found me, and gave it back. I tried to give him the cash (about 40k) and he wouldn't take it.

6 years, all in Seoul, nothing stolen and several lost items (including two wallets) returned.

Just last week a sik-dang ajumma chased me down the street because I'd left without taking my 500 won change from lunch.

When I read the above and similar stories of having cash stolen from your LOCKED apartment, here is what comes to mind:

You are a dumbass for not having the locks changed once you move in. Someone has a key to your apt and obviously can come and go anything they want. Think about that for a minute. You are sleeping and someone could come into your apartment...if you are a female, this should be a very scary thing: sexual assault and rape do occur here.

The guy who had it locked in his apartment and locked in a desk drawer just had me Shocked as wouldn't common sense tell you either the landlord, boss or former tenant is using a key and gaining entry anytime they see fit?

I started having my own locks installed on my places back in 2000...even had the landlord ask for a key to my bolt lock and I told him NO.
