i would carry it on unless you plan to wrap it in all kinds of bubble wrap. i wouldn't trust something valuable like that being tossed around

carry the box, check everything else

Carry-on! It's insane that you'd even think of checking something so fragile and expensive.

1) As someone else has noted, it can get broken easily and checked bags get kicked around like soccer balls (more or less) on the way from your departure to your destination.

2) Because of the charming political climate in our modern world, any TSA employee can choose to open up your bag and root through it for no other reason than they want to. There's very little stopping them from grabbing something nice they see inside.

NEVER check something you're not willing to lose.

When I brought my Wii over I carried it on. I even saw a sign at the airport recommending you carrying on Laptops, Cameras, and even video game consoles. Pretty much anything that could easily be taken out a your bag and resold easily. I'd definitely put your PS3 in the carry on.

I hate to think what I'm going to have to do when I go home. I have my laptop bag, another laptop-type bag with my xbox in, rucksack camera bag with a load of lenses and tripod, Wii, flatscreen 22inch tv/monitor. how the *beep* am i gonna get all that home!

BRING THE RECEIPT!!!

When I came home from a year in Europe, I had to provide a receipt to prove to the customs people in Paris that I had bought it in Canada.
