I just spoke to a girl who translates Japanese and Korean texts for an international trading company in Seoul. She gets paid 1.8 million a month. When I told her how much I get paid, about the free apartment, and my vacation time, she almost cried.
So, have you asked Koreans what they make? What have they said?

A civil servant down here told me a few days ago that his monthly salary was being cut by about 5% due to the economic downturn. This cut was meant for the government to hire more people to relieve some of the unemployment. He stated that his new salary will be 1,000,000 won.
In addition, we are paid in cash. These cash payments are given out in envelopes in front of everyone at my academy. Our envelopes are a hell of a lot bigger than those being given to the Korean teachers .... |

You're earning more than what fellow Koreans are earning (20s to early 30s Koreans)
but they have the potential of getting somewhere and earning more whereas hagwon teaching is more or less the beginning and the end.
Civil servants' wages don't go up too dramatically unless tehy're promoted to a decent 급(level) but they've got the 'pension till death do them in' deal that's pretty sweet..
It's a lot easier for you to SAVE UP, though, compared to other Koreans since they're paying for rent and cars and insurance (lots!) |

*Duh!* You have a PhD and you teach at university. The girl you are comparing yourself with has probably a BA in Japanese studies/language and isn't working at a university. Do I see where I am going with this? Anyway, Mikey, it isn't nice to make girls/women cry. That's naughty!
Translators can have a very good salary. For example, my ex (BA, does mainly translations, editing, some teaching on the side) makes 7 to 10 mil a month. Of course she has to pay her own housing and has no vacation - she'll very likely kill herself with work... but that isn't my problem anymore. |

Most Koreans get bonuses every few months, bonuses for Chusok, Lunar New Year, incentives, some even get safety bonuses. We get none of that stuff.
A lot of Koreans just assume you get paid like they do. When you tell them about a free apt, and longer vacations, they just assume you get all the bonuses and stuff plus those extra goodies. They wind up getting jealous of you when the truth is, you get a lot less.
You should count yourself lucky if you get your severence. |

Actually, I told her how much I made before she told me--but yeah, I felt really, really guilty about it.
My ex (not Korean) was a translator too, so I know they can make a lot of money if they freelance and have enough contacts. If they don't, however, they get next to nothing. It's a tough field, IMO. |

I work in a hagwon, not as a teacher, with Koreans who have the same job title as me. I get paid considerably more than them. Also working here is an American teacher, who works with Koreans who have the same job title as him. He gets paid considerably more than them.
I thought the stereotype was that foreigners get paid more than locals? |

I know an engineer for an automotive company, he makes over 100 million won a year, including bonuses
I know some Doctors. They make almost 10 million won a month.
I was told that if you own your own medical clinic in Seoul, you can bring home more than 20 million a month and you do not even have to report all your income to the tax office.
I know some public school teachers, they make between 40-50 million won a year, including bonuses.
I once heard that the owner of the Seoul Pub clears 10 million won a month.
What does all this mean?
Well...absolutely nothing! Why? Because it is all heresay - hardly anything scientific about it at all.
If you want some reality on the issue of salaries, you need to ask Real Reality or dig up the statistics yourself. And, that is the truth! |

Real Reality's links never work for me, so I take his posts with a grain of salt. |

Are you sure you don't mean 'excluding bonuses'? |
