I am planning to cancel my cell phone acct with verizon, but it will cost me $100 to do it for canceling before the contract is up. They do have a global plan though that add discounts to the international calling rates...anyone have any experience with this? |

I had verizon before i came, and i looked into the international calling plan. It's far more expensive than just buying international phone cards once you get here. I think verizon quoted me something like $.20/minute. The only perk i saw was the $.10 international text messages. If your under contract for more than 3 months, just pay the $100 and get out of it. If you have less than 3 months left, then downgrade your plan and pay it out (it should be less than the $100). |

Verizon won't let you out of the contract if you're moving out of the country? T-Mobile let me out of a contract after only a few months because I moved outside its service area, and I was hoping Verizon would do the same. |

T-mobile let me out of my contract. All I had to do was fax them my plane ticket to Korea. I thought it was too simple a way to cancel at the time. Anyhow, I saved myself the termination fee. |

Probably because t-mobile doesn't have an international plan? |

It's their policy, according to what I was told. |

the verizon lady told me the only way to waive the fee is if i was military...the exception for going out of a coverage area doesnt apply i guess...not sure if it has to do with the global plan or not |

FYI: I talked with Verizon yesterday and they let us out of our contract without much hassle at all. First they wanted our address in Korea, then a copy of a lease or employment contract, and then she put me on hold and came back saying Verizon doesn't need any of that stuff. Clearly they must not have a cut-and-dried practice here, but it worked out for us.
So it can be done, although you may have to ask nicely and make it clear that Verizon helping you out here will go a long way towards you signing up with them again when you move back. |

All you have to do is call them up...tell them you're moving out of the country...if they resist just complain a bit more...they'll terminate any fee.
That's how America works...you get benefits if you're a rude customer because they don't want to deal with you. |

Sounds like a plan...give 'em hell until they agree...random question...would I be able to activate my iPhone over in Korea for use as my primary cell or would it not work? Or is that another question for AT&T? |

I just moved to Korea recently. I had a Verizon contract. I was told that if I was moving out of the country, they would waive the early termination fee. I just needed to submit some kind a of proof. My employment contract would suffice. I cancelled it over the phone. My plan was still valid to the end of the billing cycle (monthly), and I would need to pay accordingly, no big deal. The operator on the phone with me who canceled my plan put a note in to waive the early termination fee.
They asked that I send a copy of my contract and attach a letter with my info (name and phone number) to their auditing department. I should find out shortly what happened, as the end of my billing cycle just ended the other day.
If you get trouble from one operator, just tell them you won't cancel. Keep calling until you get an operator who does confirm this. Make sure that the operator puts in a request for this waiver when canceling your account. |
