I've always had some sort of infatuation with bagpipes. I once looked into buying some, but i didn't/don't think i could be self-taught.
Kind of random, i know, but anyone play? |

| Bagpipes are a bitch, ever see the music? There's no stopping the airflow, so between every two notes are a bunch of grace notes to make the transition. To top it all off, you need a lot of lung power to inflate the bag while you play. If you've any experience with wind instruments, I imagine you can pull it off. Make sure you save your neighbors some agony and get a practice room somewhere. |

| You could play up on one of these mountains. Maybe make a vacation to Scotland to get a dose of the real deal? |

| As a guy whose father tried to get him to play them I have one piece of advice. Don't bother. They are not for the timid. Being quite athletic, healthy and young I wasn't even able to inflate them. My dad used to have to "get them going" for me and even after that it was hard to keep them going. Beautiful to listen to when played well, a friggin nightmare to play. |

| They must be hard to play because every time I've seen somebody using them they're letting out an godawful screech. |

Try blowing up the ass of a squealing cat to get an idea of the logistics involved!
Naw, seriously, I used to play bagpipes-lite when I was in primary school in Scotland. It's called a chanter, and was the like a flute shaped thing with the musical reed and finger holes which give the bagpipes their sound. The chanter doesn't have the bag and big pipes though, but once you master a few tunes on a chanter then it is a simple progression on to the bagpipes.
I used to like the quick-fingered tunes we used to practice.
Try a Wiki search on chanter. |

Don't do it man! I was born and raised in Dunedin, FL (the sister sister to Scotland). Our high school band had bagpipes!!! They are annoying as hell!
That being said, if you think you might like them, try it out. I do believe they are VERY hard to learn though. I've known some guys in school that played them. It looks like their heads are about to explode by breathing so hard into them. They do sound terrible when you don't know how to play them, but there are some beautiful songs played on bagpipes. |

Totally do it. Don't listen to the American. Bagpipes are cool, sound fantastic (although they are categorically not indoor instruments) and haunting. I have no idea if they're hard to play or not, just that almost every boy at school chose it as their instrument in school (highlands) and they got on fine. Give it a shot. |

| I don't think i will end up going out of my way to get some and learn, but i would like to give it a shot one day. I have some experience playing the bassoon, and i think have pretty decent pipes. If i stumble across a good deal on some, and i have the resources, i'll probably give it a shot. Thanks for the input. |
